The "Be a Tree" Dog Bite Prevention program will be at 6:30 pm on Thursday, July 31, 2014. "Safety with Dogs in the Community" will be at 6:30 pm on Thurs- day, August 7, 2014. Both programs will be by Lary Lindsay of DreamDogs Grooming &Training. The "Be a Tree" program is the only dog bite prevention program to be promoted by major professional organiza- tions. Over 500,000 children in Canada, the US and around the world have ben- efited from attending this program. The program teaches elementary school age children how to read dog body language, and how to stay safe around dogs. According to the American Veterinary Medical Associa- tion and the Canada Safety Council, dog bites to chil- dren are a significant public health problem. Half of all children are bitten by a dog. Most of these bites are by the family dog or other dog known to the child. Experts agree that education is the best way to reduce dog bite risk. The "Be A Tree" program is for elementary school chil- dren and their parents. The "Safety with Dogs in the Community" presenta- tion will focus on what steps community members can take to ensure that people and dogs can safely enjoy their outings around town. We will review the local bylaws. Then we will exam- ine proactive measures that can be taken by dog owners to prevent problems with other dogs or people. We will also look at how to stay safe in encounters with out - of -control dogs if a problem comes up. Anyone is wel- come to attend. Please register for either or both "Be A Tree" or "Safety with Dogs in the Commu- nity" programs at the Luc - know Public Library at 519- 528-3011, or at DreamDogs at 611 Campbell Street, Lucknow.
