Training
Two Dog Bite Prevention
programs will be presented
at the Lucknow Public
Library. The "Be a Tree" Dog
Bite Prevention program will
be at 6:30 pm on Thursday,
July 31, 2014. "Safety with
Dogs in the Community"
will be at 6:30 pm on Thurs-
day, August 7, 2014. Both
programs will be by Lary
Lindsay of DreamDogs
Grooming &Training.
The "Be a Tree" program is
the only dog bite prevention
program to be promoted by
major professional organiza-
tions. Over 500,000 children
in Canada, the US and
around the world have ben-
efited from attending this
program. The program
teaches elementary school
age children how to read dog
body language, and how to
stay safe around dogs.
According to the American
Veterinary Medical Associa-
tion and the Canada Safety
Council, dog bites to chil-
dren are a significant public
health problem. Half of all
children are bitten by a dog.
Most of these bites are by the
family dog or other dog
known to the child. Experts
agree that education is the
best way to reduce dog bite
risk.
The "Be A Tree" program
is for elementary school chil-
dren and their parents.
The "Safety with Dogs in
the Community" presenta-
tion will focus on what steps
community members can
take to ensure that people
and dogs can safely enjoy
their outings around town.
We will review the local
bylaws. Then we will exam-
ine proactive measures that
can be taken by dog owners
to prevent problems with
other dogs or people. We
will also look at how to stay
safe in encounters with out -
of -control dogs if a problem
comes up. Anyone is wel-
come to attend.
Please register for either or
both "Be A Tree" or "Safety
with Dogs in the Commu-
nity" programs at the Luc -
know Public Library at 519-
528-3011, or at DreamDogs
at 611 Campbell Street,
Lucknow.

Mark 100 Years in
2014
Mary MacGillivray of Lucknow will
celebrate her 100th birthday on October
22, 2014. As a farmer's wife and mother
of 9 she knows what it is to work hard.
Her daughters say that she has had her
share of broken bones over the years,
as well withstanding surgeries. After
leaving the farm MacGillivray lived in
her own home in Lucknow for 36 years
until she was 95 years old. She used
to work at Pinecrest Manor, where she
now resides, and is the oldest surviving
employee. MacGillivray posed with her

El Camino
Maitland 2014
Erica Clark
Maitland Trail Association
The El Camino Maitland
2014 will take place on
September 27 and 28, 2014
on the Maitland Trail.
Generously sponsored by
Libro Credit Union, this
two day 49km hike covers
the entire Maitland Trail
from Auburn to the Goder-
ich beach pavillion. Day
one is a 29km hike and day
two is 20km. For individu-
als unsure if they want to
do the full 49km there are
shorter starting points
available on Saturday and
Sunday.
The Maitland Trail
Association is providing
rest stops with water and
snacks along the route
and a shuttle service to
the starting locations.
Saturday evening features
a local harvest feast
catered by Devin Tabor.
Last year, registration filled
up extremely quickly; before
we even got posters up
advertising the event! We
have increased the size of the
event this year but it is still
important to register early to
avoid disappointment.
Cost per person for El
Camino Maitland is $25 for
adults and $10 for children
for the hike and $30 for the
dinner Saturday night. See
the Maitland Trail Associa-
tion website at http://www.
maitlandtrail.ca/2014-el-
camino/ for more details
and to register for this
exciting event.
