Can you handle the Lucknow Little Mudder?
Jackie Fischer
Race Co-ordinator, the Lucknow
Little Mudder
Once again, the Lucknow Lit-
tle Mudder will be the ultimate
kick-off to the Lucknow Fall
Fair! The Lucknow Little Mud -
der is an obstacle course featur-
ing military- and agricultural -
based obstacles. The course
terrain will feature approxi-
mately 3 K of hills and mud. It is
being held as a part of the 151st
Lucknow Fall Fair, taking place
September 19-21, 2014. The Lit-
tle Mudder runs on Saturday
morning with sign in at 8 and
race starting at 9. The race will
start at the Kinsmen Soccer
Fields, 901 Havelock St. It is not
a typical race as there are no
winners or losers; participants
are encouraged to work
together to overcome obstacles
and just have fun!
Last year, the Lucknow Little
Mudder raised over $4400 for
the Lucknow Agricultural Soci-
ety. This money is being used to
bring in an exciting new Mid-
way for the 2014 Fall Fair. This
year, we are welcoming partici-
pants age 14+ and have added
80 more openings!
If you are interested in being
a participant, we encourage
you to visit the new Lucknow
Agricultural Society website,

Icnowagsociety.carwww.luc-
knowags o ciety.c a for more
information and to find out
about online registration. Reg-
istration prices will increase in
August, and by registering early
you will get the most "Mudder
Swag"!
Not interested in getting
muddy? There are a number of
other ways you can be a part of
this exciting event: 1. Volun-
teering: we require volunteers
to assist in set up, overseeing
each obstacle and the course
during the race, and post -event
clean up. 2. Obstacle design or
donations: we are looking for
donations of building material,
rope, cargo net - anything we

can use to build our obstacles
(we're very creative!). Have an
idea & the resources to build an
obstacle? We'd love to hear
about it! 3. Sponsorship: we
seek support from local busi-
nesses/individuals for our pro-
motional items and race sup-
plies . Please contact us for
details if you would like your
logo carried on our "swag" for
years to come!

Overview of MA Work Plan
Presented to Huron -Kinloss Council
Maitland Valley
Conservation Authority
Valerie Gillies
Editor/Lucknow Sentinel
Phil Beard and Steve Jackson pre-
sented an overview of the 2014-2016
work plan for the Maitland Valley Con-
servation Authority (MVCA) at the Gen-
eral Committee Meeting of Huron -Kin-
loss Council on July 7,2014.
There are 15 municipalities that fund
MVCA. Within the area under their juris-
diction there are 470,000 acres of agricul-
tural land, 80,000 acres of hardwood
and53 acres of softwood. There is bass
fishing and 50km of shoreline with cot-
tages and beaches. This totals
$7,600,000,000 worth of property in land
development.
There are 4 Service Areas that were dis-
cussed in the presentation: Restructure
Flood and Erosion Safety Services, Water-
shed Stewardship Services, Conservation
Area Services and Corporate Services.
Currently the services on the flood
plain include structures which hold
equipment to monitor conditions 24
hours per day. There are 4 rain gauges, 2
stream gauges to monitor flood magni-
tude, as well as 3 rain gauges on private
property. The main concern is flooding in
Lucknow. It has happened before and it
will happen again. A system needs to be
set up to specify who to contact to evacu-
ate residents. A study needs to be done to
indentify structures and houses most at
risk, road closures and the progression of
flooding. This information can then be
mapped to show the progression through
the various stages of flooding. To develop
this system there needs to be detailed
ground information. Flood emergency
plans for evacuations and road closures
need to be developed. This information
would also be beneficial in technical
review to plan safe and sensible new
development such as new construction
and road crossings. MVCA has 14 dam-
age centres to provide planning for.
Watershed stewardship is important as
watersheds are less resilient than in the
past. The emphasis will be placed on
rural storm management which operates
on the slow -spread -soak principles.
These include techniques to slow runoff
and to spread out the water over more
area to allow more water to soak into the
ground. The strategies that will be
employed include broadbased water
control berms, natural channel design
with 2 -stage drains to reduce sediment,
constructed wetland to filter the water,
soil health through cover crops, reforest-
ing marginal farmland, winbreaks and
living snow fences.
The Conservation Areas mush look
for savings in order for the MVCA to
invest in erosion control. Plans include
finding ways to reduce maintenance
costs and infrastructure. MVCA wants
to set a good example of land steward-
ship for others to follow by doing such
things as reforesting marginal land
areas which are currently leased to
farmers. Smaller conservation areas are
being naturalized to reduce mainte-
nance. There are 2 old mills that are
surplus buildings in Brussels and Gor-
rie that no one has found a use for. The
Falls Reserve Conservation Authority
Campgrounds is too expensive to
upgrade. It needs to either be leased
out or turned into a day area. The
MVCA carbon footprint needs to be
reduced through more efficient vehi-
cles and planting enough trees to
reduce the carbon that is produced.
