Wawanosh 4-H starts girls night out club
By Reba Jefferson
On Friday, June 27 at 7pm at
the Jefferson home, members of
the Wawanosh 4-H club met to
begin their new club - Girls Night
Out. This club focuses on wom-
en's health, fitness, appearance
and self-esteem. Leader, Mary
Ellen Foran, opened the meeting
with the pledge then went over
the requirements of the club.
In order to get to know each
other better and start the meeting
on a positive note, 5 letters of the
alphabet were called and members
wrote compliments starting with
these letters about the person
across from them. Members
enjoyed hearing the wonderful
things others said about them.
Mary Ellen then ran the election of
officers. Kate Higgins was elected
president with Loretta Higgins as
her vice. Maisy Jefferson was nomi-
nated for secretary and Reba Jeffer-
son for press reporter. Jillian Martin
was voted attendance recorder and
Melissa Higgins for cover designer.
Next, Kate, the newly elected
president, led roll call which asked
members what healthy meant to
them. Members' answers included
being physically fit, free from illness

and following the Canada Food
Guide. Roll call led into a discussion
of the truths and myths of healthy
eating and dieting. Mary Ellen then
asked members to read informa-
tion on self-esteem that was pro-
vided in the book Two videos on
high and low self-esteem were also
shown, and a discussion followed.
To take a break, the club went
outside and played a game of
SPUD. When the members
returned, they watched two
more videos on how to do a sock
bun in one's hair Members then
picked a partner and tried the
sock bun on them. After every-
one had a chance to try a sock
bun and get their own hair done,
the club enjoyed yogurt popsi-
cles and strawberries. Then Kate
closed the meeting with the
motto. The next meeting will be
held on Thursday, July 3 at Hair
and Beyond in Wingham at
7pm.
