Buy Once, Eat Twice Annual Joint Service and Picnic

Linda's Tips
Valerie Gillies
Editor/Lucknow Sentinel
Linda Emmerton, an
active member of the Hor-
ticultural Society, likes to
experiment. Recently she
was on Facebook and
came across a page on
Plant Care that had all
sorts of interesting tips
and tricks to try out.
The trick Emmerton
went with was rooting
produce she had pur-
chased to eat. Once she
had enjoyed feasting on
the main part of the bok
choy and romaine let-
tuce, she put the stem
ends in a pan of water.
She changed the water
every few days and
within a couple of weeks
they had sprouted new
roots. The photo shows
her plants at various
stages of growth. The
largest are now ready to
be planted in the garden
to produce another crop.
This experiment
appealed to Emmerton
as it reduces and reuses
kitchen waste. She has
nicknamed her project
"Buy once, eat twice"
There are many types of
tips on the intemet. From
the same page Emmerton
reports that you can spray
a vinegar solution around
doors or windows to repel
spiders. For other
unwanted pests you can
mix vinegar, Dawn dish
soap and salt in a gallon of
water and spray this in
problem areas.
Emmerton plans to
share more of the tricks
she has already tried or
has yet to find. Watch for
her proposed column
"Linda's Tips" in future
editions of The Sentinel.
Erema Haldenby
The joint congregations of
Knox Teeswater and Kinlough
Presbyterian churches met on
Sunday, June 22, 2014 for their
annual outdoor service and pic-
nic lunch.
This year's gathering hosted
by the Kinlough congregation
met at the farm of Barb and
Bruce Bushell on Guest Ave.
The Kim and Bushell families
led the prelude song of favourite
hymns. During the service the
Ballagh Bunch wand Bushell
Family performed special
music. Lydia and Gloria Kim
sang during the offeratory.
Following the message, enti-
tled "Dream" by Rev. Owen Kim,
folks gathered for a time of fel-
lowship with an abundance of
food on a beautifully manicured
lawn under the trees on a per-
fect day.
The young folk played games
later.
The sympathy of the congre-
gations goes out to the Simpson
and Gowland families on the
death of Doug Simpson,
Teeswater in his 90th year. His
funeral was Saturday, June 21.

The mule -drawn cart was the fashionable
way to tour downtown Lucknow during
the Strawberry Summerfest. These docile
fellows wait patiently as riders dismount
and mount behind the Community Centre.
