School's out for the summer Avon Maitland School Board Highlights
OPP
Students are out on summer break
and the Ontario Provincial Police
(OPP), would like to see them enjoy the
summer months safely. We can expect
an increase in the amount of pedestrian
traffic as scooters, rollerblades, skate-
boards and bicycles take to the streets
and sidewalks. Parents and care givers
are asked to review safety rules with
their youth.
Remind your children of the impor-
tance of pedestrian & cycling rules of
the road, particularly when walldng and
crossing the street.
The OPP is offering the following tips
for a safe and enjoyable summer:
1. Slow down and drive with care,
especially near parks and recreation
centres.
2. Use crosswalks or intersections to
cross streets safely. Never step out into

summer.
In their last meeting of the
school year, the Board's Student
Advisory Committee, known as
the Student Senate presented a
new constitution to the Board,
along with a How to be a Senator
Manual for future members of the
Senate. The Senators which
includes the two student trustees
outlined the purpose of having a
constitution and to help raise the
profile of the position in the Avon
Maitland Schools. This year's Sen-
ate developed the "How to Man-
ual" so that when the new Sena-
tors take their positions in
September, they are up and run-
ning faster and the orientation
time on the job is reduced, mak-
ing the Student Senate more
effective.
Hand Foot and Mouth Infections Spreading Free Dental Care in Honour of Local Dentist
Huron County Health Unit
The Huron County Health Unit is seeing
an increase in hand foot and mouth disease
(HFMD) also called coxsaclde. They are
advising residents, particularly parents of
children attending daycares,
to stop the spread of infection by increas-
ing hand washing.
Public Health Nurse Dori Taylor says
hand foot and mouth infections may cause
fever, poor appetite and blisters in mouth,
on palms of hands and bottom of feet The
virus can be found in saliva, blister fluid and
stool and is spread from person-to-person
by unwashed hands.
Taylor encourages children be kept
home from daycare if they are sick and may
return when able to participate in normal
activities. There is no specific treatment for
HFMD and most people will recover in a
few days.
"Hand washing with soap and water
for 20 seconds is the best way to prevent
the spread of this infection as well as
other infections" says Taylor. Using an
alcohol based hand sanitizer with
between 70-90% alcohol when hands are
not visibly dirty can also work. Hands
should be cleaned
after using the washroom, after changing
diapers, after shaking hands and
before preparing and eating food.
Huron County Health Unit
The Clinton Dental Clinic is
honouring its founder by offer-
ing a day of free dental care in
July.
Dentistry from the Heart is set
for Friday, July 11, 2014 and is
open to anyone. Adults can
choose between having a filling,
an extraction or a cleaning. Chil-
dren can have cleaning and flu-
oride treatment.
Dr. Grant Lee passed away
suddenly last July. He learned
about Dentistry from the Heart
years ago and had a dream of
offering a day of free dentistry as
a way to give back to his com-
munity. His family and staff feel
that this is the best way to hon-
our his memory.
Registration starts at 7 a.m. at
the Clinton Dental Clinic at 218
Ontario Street in Clinton. The
clinic will run from 8 a.m. to 3:30
p.m. and you must show up in
person to register that day.
Patients will be booked on a
first-come, first-served basis
until the schedule has been
filled. The Clinic suggests that
people come prepared to wait
outside and to bring water,
snacks and toys for your
children.
If you have questions, call the
Clinton Dental Clinic at
519-482-9392.
The day is also supported by
the Huron County Health Unit
and the County of Huron Social
Services.
