She is currently a student t Queen's University in her second year. "I grew up just south of Lucknow and went to Brookside Public School, starting my running career early as I always enjoyed the cross country and track seasons," she said. I then attended EE. Madill, where I was for- tunate to have two truly dedicated and motivational coaches throughout my time in high school, the Lisles. Over the course of my 4 years, Gary and Maureen helped shape my fitness and push my potential with every practice and competition. I was often questioned whether I was part of a club or another running team, but I am proud to say that I had all the support I needed through Madill's track/cross-country program. I pro- gressed my way up and finished off my final year with an OFSAA team gold in senior girls cross-country and an individual gold in OFSAA 1500m steeplechase, I couldn't have asked for anything more," she said. By attending Queen's University, she said she's been pushed to new limits and bigger opportunities. "The first major change in joining the Varsity XC team was the amount of mileage. With two workouts and a few easy runs in grade 12, it was tough getting the feel for packing in 80-100km each week. Becoming part of a new team, whatever the sport may be, is always a big adjustment as well: new teammates, new coaches, new standards, and new goals. I tried not to put too much pressure on myself, as I wasn't expecting to make the championship team as a rookie. But as it turned out, I worked my way to the Ontario and Canadian Interuni- versity Championships (OUA/CIS) in , - COUNTY OF BRUCE HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS & SPECIAL WASTE • EVENT COLLECTION SCHEDULE WANGEPROP 2014 When in doubt, don't throw it out. "Finish- ing off XC we headed right onto the track, where I also qualified for CIS in Edmonton coming 5th in the 1500m. I spent the summer of 2013 back in Lucknow, training at the Madill track and following my coach's (Steve Boyd's) schedule. I was looking for- ward to the outdoor season, and hav- ing the chance to race the 3000m stee- plechase, which I finished off with a bronze medal at the Senior National Track & Field Championships in Moncton, (New Brunswick)." She finished the XC season in November with a gold medal and a team bronze in the women's six kilo- metre, and she was also awarded the CIS Athlete of the year award. "I felt strong throughout the season with confidence in my training, but never thought of taking a real stab for a podium finish. In being the top run- ner at CIS along with my teammate Victoria Coates, we were selected for the FISU World University Cross Country (WUC) Championship, which takes place on March 22 in Entebbe, Uganda," she said. But with this opportunity, comes some big bills. "I feel honoured to represent Queen's and Team Canada," she said. "With big opportunities there also come the financial costs." The estimated total of the trip is $3,000, which includes the flight and accommodation. For more informa- tion, visit www.facebook.com/fis- u2014uganda. There is an information package and donation forms. "I would love the support in having this opportunity to race in Uganda, and further reach my potential in this sport," she said. She asks that donations are received by March 1. "As of now, I am currently training for indoor track, still keeping up the mileage to maintain my endurance for FISU. I am focusing on the 3000m this year which I ran the auto -qualify- ing time in Ohio at the end of January, securing me a spot at CIS in Edmon- ton at the beginning of March. With just over a month to go, I am doing everything I can to prepare for the upcoming track and WUC champion- ships," she said. "Balancing the sport with a full-time course load can be tough, but I enjoy the challenge. I'm looking forward to these upcoming races, and all else that is in store dur- ing my time at Queen's. From the first grass loop race at Brookside, to OFSAA high school races, to Cana- dian Interuniversity Championships, and now having the chance to race at the world level, I look forward to see how much further I can push myself. I never thought I would make it here, and I hope I say the same thing down the road."
