Parkinson SuperWalk
Mary Golem
QMI
Everyday heroes with extraordi-
nary hope will put their best foot
forward to participate in the sev-
enth annual South Grey Bruce and
Hanover Area Parkinson Super -
Walk next Saturday, September 6th.
Registration begins at 8 a.m. in
the Hanover Park, with the opening
ceremonies set to start at 10 a.m.
The walk will take participants,
who can choose their own distance,
on a designated path through the
park. All portions of the walk are
wheelchair and stroller accessible,
says one of the event organizers
Carol Kraft.
Following the walk, there will be
entertainment and a barbecue.
Last year's event raised $46,000
- money that is used for patient
support services, education,
advocacy and research into a dis-
ease that now affects one in 30
people, Kraft said. Canada contin-
ues to be a world leader in Parkin-
son's research, she added.
Parkinson's is a chronic, degen-
erative neurological condition
without a known cause or cure,
which slowly disables people over
time. Once thought to be a disease
exclusive to the elderly, a growing
number of people under the age of
40 are now being diagnosed, Kraft
said, adding with the aging popula-
tion, it is anticipated that the inci-
dence of Parkinson's will double by
the year 2016.
The Parkinson SuperWalk not only
raises much-needed funds, it also
helps to increase awareness about
the disease and raises funds for the
Parkinson Society of Southwestern
Ontario, the regional voice for the
10,000 people living with the disease
in Southwestern Ontario.
"Our purpose is to ease the bur-
den and find a care," Kraft said,
adding she is hoping for 150 par-
ticipants in this year's Walk - "and
we're hoping for better weather!"
For the past three years, the South
Grey Bruce and Hanover Area
SuperWalk has been hit with "rot-
ten weather - cold and rainy" but
despite the poor weather, Kraft
said Parkinson supporters
"remain determined and enthusi-
astic. That in itself speaks volumes
about the support we receive."
Pledge sheets for the Septem-
ber 6th Parkinson's SuperWalk are

Helen Edmonds Will be
September's Guest Artist
Goderich Coop
Gallery

September's Guest Artist at the
Goderich Coop Gallery, Helen
Edmonds of Stratford, says she is
"an archeologist of herself".
Now I don't know about you,
but this seems to be a very intrigu-
ing concept. Apparently, it refers
to the manner in which she has
integrated the memories of a life-
time of travels into her imagina-
tive paintings and clay creations.
Edmonds says she finds tedium
in the "blight of shopping malls
and parking lots" in our modern
landscape, so seeks instead to uti-
lize her artistic skills to create a
more romanticized vision created
from her lifetime of experiences
travelling, studying, and visiting
art galleries and museums.
In Edmond's paintings we will
find the stately architectural
solidity of stone as found in walls,
buildings, castles, and cliffs, sof-
tened with greenery, but unpopu-
lated. Whereas, in her clay crea-
tions, we find the excitement and
vitality of a world filled with the
vibrant, colourful figures of Medi-
terranean cultures. Can't wait to
see this creative juxtaposition? It
will be on display through the
month of September at the
Goderich Coop Gallery, from
Monday through Saturday,
between 11 a.m., and 5 p.m.,
where you will find a member art-
ist always on duty. See you there!
