South Kinloss Cemetery Decoration Day Service
Valerie Gillies
Editor, Lucknow Sentinel
The August 17, 2014 Deco-
ration Day Service at South
Kinloss Cemetery was well
attended.
The programs which were
given out highlighted a brief
history. The first burial took
place in 1857. An official
plan was drawn by James
Marshall for the church and
cemetery on the South East
Corner of lot 11, concession
2 in 1873. Rev. A. M. (Sandy)
Nicholson called a meeting
to discuss improvements to
the cemetery in 1930. This
meeting resulted in the cem-
etery being incorporated
and the perpetual care fund
was created. This funding
model was copied by the
provincial government for all
cemeteries in Ontario. The
Memorial Gates and Fence
were dedicated in 1953 while
the Chapel and Mortuary
were didcated in 1963.
Rev. Peggy Kinsman offici-
ated at the service which
focused on a memorial
theme, including prayers,
scriptures, a message and a
time of remembrance.
Music was provided by
Dale Gilchrist as pianist. The
duet of Dale and Marilynne
Gilchirst performed "In the
Garden". Following the Ben-
ediction Geral Mowbray
played "Amazing Grace" on
the bagpipes.
Families with loved ones
resting there wish to recog-
nize and thank the South
Kinloss Cemetery 2014
Board Members: Don Bell,
Wayne Bell, Fred deBoer,

Owen Sound Golf & Country Club Closure
Creates New Opportunities for Youth
Community Foundation
of Grey Bruce
Submitted
When the Owen Sound Golf Course
closed its doors in 2011, it was the end of
an era and a sad day for its members who
called the fairways their home away from
home for nearly a century. But thanks to
the generosity of some former members,
including deceased individuals with
Estates overseen by trustees, Community
Foundation Grey Bruce is pleased to
announce that it is has received a dona-
tion of approximately $3500 from these
sources. This donation begins to lay the
groundwork for a forthcoming Owen
Sound Golf and Country Club Golf Bur-
sary Fund.
The funds resulted from the termina-
tion of the bankruptcy process of the
Owen Sound Golf & Country Club,
through final sale certificates paid to
members in good standing. Community
Foundation Grey Bruce is seeking to
increase the funding from other former
members or interested parties to allow
for a formal Bursary Fund to be opened
in the name of the Owen Sound Golf and

Country Club. As a registered public
charity, Community Foundation Grey
Bruce will issue a tax receipt for the entire
amount donated by any individual. In
turn, the Foundation can assist donors
and make a difference in the lives of com-
munity youth.
The Foundation is celebrating its 20th
anniversary in 2014. It is actively pursuing
funding for its Smart & Caring Education
Fund to benefit students pursuing all four
pillars of post -secondary education: uni-
versity, college, apprenticeship and work-
place training programs. Approximately
33% of local students are choosing
apprenticeships for career paths, as there
are jobs available in this sector. The aver-
age age of a trades person in Grey and
Bruce is 55 yrs old, so increased training
in this sector is vital for future stability.
Although some university and college
scholarships and bursaries are available
through the boards of education and the
business sector, less than 2% of all availa-
ble assistance is allocated to apprentice-
ship and workplace training programs.
The Smart & Caring Education initiative
aims to address this imbalance while
growing the fund overall to help local stu-
dents pursue all post -secondary educa-
tion goals. The campaign runs until 2017,
and aims to increase the existing educa-
tion fund by an additional million
dollars.
Several apprenticeship programs are
offered in the golf industry, as well as pro-
grams geared to professional recreation
studies. The Foundation does not have an
existing bursary for these students. Dona-
tions are still needed to bring the fund to
the level where grants can be awarded.
We seek the public's help to reach out to
former members of the Owen Sound Golf
& Country Club and other interested par-
ties to reach this goal.
