Region 5 at Royal Winter Fair

4-H Go for the
Gold
Maisy Jefferson
Team Wawanosh, repre-
senting Region 5, will be
heading to the Royal Agricul-
tural Winter Fair on Novem-
ber 1, 2014 for the 4-H Pro-
vincial Go For the Gold
Competition. Region 5
includes the counties of
Bruce, Grey, Huron, and
Perth. This year, Team
Wawansoh team consists of
Loretta Higgins, Maisy Jeffer-
son, Scott Jefferson and Con-
nor Rogers; with Cathy
Drennan as the lead coach.
In order for teams to partici-
pate at the provincial level,
they must have competed
and placed first or second at
their local county level and
then place first at their
regional level. For 33 years,
Go for the Gold has been an
integral part of many 4-H
projects across the province.
The competition presents
the ultimate challenge to
members by testing their
skills and knowledge of 4-H,
agriculture, life skills, food,
nutrition and current events.
On July 9, 2014 the Huron
County Go for the Gold Com-
pletion was held in Clinton.
Lucknow 4-H Field Crop
Meet at
Snobelen Farms

Meeting Five of the Lucknow
Field Crop club was held on
July 31st at Snobelen Farms
in Lucknow. Once all mem-
bers had arrived, President
Logan Curran opened the
meeting with the pledge.
Roll call followed. Each
member described the stage
their project field. Shannon
Bieman then welcomed the
members to Snobelen Farms
and led a brief presentation

tered and the process of
cross breeding soybean vari-
eties to create high yield
seed. Shannon also touched
on Snobelen's customer
base and what they are look-
ing for in their soybean
products. Leader, Kim
Hooey, next led the mem-
bers outside to take a look at
their plants as each member
was to bring in a plant from
their project field. Kim
taught the member how to
determine the degree of
pollination in their corn and
soybean plants.
After all members had
checked the pollination,
Shannon led the club to
Plant #1 where the seed is
sorted, treated and pack-
aged. The members were
able to see the old flax
grinder, the treatment
equipment, and the sewing
machine used to sew the
bags. On their way to Plant
#2, members walked
through the warehouse. In
the export plant, Jason
Clark described to the
members the process the
Two teams, Hensall and
Wawanosh placed first and
second respectively. Both
teams then competed in the
regional competition, held in
Walkerton on August 13,
2014. In this Region 5 com-
pletion there was a 3 way tie
for first place. A semi-final
and final match was then
held. Wawanosh won against
Hanover in the semi-finals
and then went on to beat
Perth 1 in the final match.

Members headed back
inside to the boardroom for
a Soy Shake made by Angela.
The next meeting will be
held on August 28th at 7 pm
at Ken and Kyle DeCorte's of
Seaforth.
