The Lucknow Sentinel, 2014-08-06, Page 7CONTINUED FROM > PAGE 6 Signs that your tree is infected starts with small D -shaped holes a little big- ger than a pencil lead in the tree trunk. The tree dies out in a V formation starting at the crown and working its way down the tree. After 30% dieback a tree is considered unsavable. At this point it is better to take the tree down or let nature take its course. Taking the tree down will stop the infection, however The treatment for the ash borer involves the profession drilling holes in the trunk just to the back of the bark every 4" in a spiral beginning at about knee height to about chest height. MacIn- tosh warns that drilling in a circle substantially weakens the tree. The implant to treat for the ash borer must be into the bark, not into the tree so depth is critical. Spray paste is then applied to fix the wound. In time, the treatment capsules and holes will disappear. MacIntosh emphasizes that prevention is the key to saving the local ash tree pop- ulation. Any trees under 8"-10" in diameter will not be treated. For these trees MacIntosh recommends applying a deep root ferti- lizer to speed up the growth to where they can be treated, if it becomes necessary. It is too late this season to treat for emerald ash borer unless your professional recom- mends it. A treatment should last for 2 years, again on the advice of your pro- fessional as there are 2 existing treat- ments on the mar- ket and MacIntosh has only trained in the one he prefers for personal reasons. When deciding which trees to treat, first take into account how valu- able each specific tree is to your property. It is a prominent land- scape feature or is the main shade protection for your home and prop- erty it is worth the investment to save it. MacIntosh rec- ommends not cut- ting down an ash tree unless you are ordered to do so. Even if it is infected he recom- mends natural die - down as you never know what research or natural preda- tors may be discovered in the near future that may save the tree. MacIntosh points out, "60%-70% of the hard- wood canopy from Amberley to Kincardine are ash trees. Imagine what it would look like if all of those trees were gone If you would like more in- depth knowledge on the biology of the ash trees or of a more scientific nature, MacIntosh recommends a very knowledgeable resource, David Wilby of DF Wilby Tree Surgeons. You can find his website at www. wilbytrees. ca. To contact John MacIntosh at Enviro- Masters Lawn Care call the office at 519-395-5622 or e-mail john@enviromasters.com. The one behind shows the natural dieoff of lower branches as the tree grows taller, the one in the foreground shows part of the foliage. July 2014. SAUGEEN MOBILITY wp.d. RECIOKA.I.
