CanaM, Aocnal Member of the Canadian Community Newspaper Association and the Ontario Community Newspapers Association Val's Views Valerie Gillies How Do We Entice People to Participate? I was saddened to hear that the Luc - know Fall Fair Ambassador Competi- tion has been cancelled for the 2014 year due to lack of interest. Not enough contestants came forward to partici- pate in the competition. Amanda Scott stated that the trend over the past few years has been that there are less contestants entering each year. Today's youth just does not have the same interests in the Fall Fair that earlier generations did. It seems that this trend of evolving away from traditional interests and pastimes is widespread. I have been hearing from all of the service groups that I speak with that they are strug- gling to find volunteers to assist with their events and fundraisers. Many events that I am involved with are struggling to bring the youth and even their parents to the admission lines. I have some theories of my own of why this is happening, but rather than write them here now I would rather get some input from the community. I am inviting anyone who would like to discuss this to submit either an opinion article or a letter to the editor to give their views. Any that are appro- priate to print will be published. I do ask that they be kept down to a regular typewritten page or less to allow for others to have their say. To get a well-rounded commentary started, I would like to see thoughts from youth, both those who are involved in activities, teams or groups, as well as those who are not. Why are they involved or not? What would it take to get them more involved? I would also like input from those who work with youth. What trends do you see? What are you or your group doing to motivate the younger folk. Extending this train of thought, it would be interesting to hear from adult groups, as well. What are the trends for membership and participation in your groups? How are activities evolving to include younger members? How are you going about attracting new mem- bers? Yes, this is even an invitation for service groups and special interest groups to pen a letter to sell the positive aspects of belonging to their group to prospective members. I am hoping that this exercise will spur some interest in what is out there in the community. Perhaps some new ideas will surface that will be beneficial to many. I look forward to the comments and critiques. This is our commu- nity. Together we can make it stronger and more rewarding going into the future. Let's chat... LUCKNOW NEWS By Ruth Dobrensky Happy 80th birthday to Mary A. McIn- tosh who had a dance last Saturday evening. Many happy returns Mary. Congratulations also to Maureen Matchett who was recently presented with the Kinette of the Year Award, it just shows that the busier some people are, the more they get done. In case you haven't heard, there is a fundraiser being held this weekend for little Cayden Sloetjes, son of Anthony and Vanessa. If there is any way you can help, please do so. It's hard to think of Anthony with a little one of his own, but when I first met him, he was in the first HAWK Theatre's production as a young teen in The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. Well our Civic Holiday weedend or Lord Simcoe Day is now past, hope you had a good one. Although the holiday is celebrated in most provinces, it has dif- ferent names in different provinces, and to that end Manitoba is changing the name to Terry Fox Day. I also heard there is a plan to request the federal government make it an official holiday in all provinces and territories and to name it after Terry Fox in whose name millions has been raised for cancer research. Since most people have heard of Terry Fox but not Lord Simcoe or whoever, perhaps that's a good idea. What do you think? Well the summer is half over with, parents are looking forward to school starting again in September, kids are wishing they could have another month off school, and those of us who are retired are planning to go away when- ever we want, I will be going away with my great-nephew Nick for a week in August and am looking forward to hav- ing a good time with him. It's true, kids can be tiring, but they also keep you young. Purple Grove News Purple Grove WI Tuesday last week the 4-H Conserva- tion Club went on their field trip to the Saugeen Valley Conservation Area and had a great time exploring and doing water studies. Thanks Anne and Steve for setting this up! Wednesday evening the 23rd, the Bruce County Holstein Club Twilight Meeting was at the farm of Jim and Fran Farrell. About 150 people were in attendance and enjoyed the socializing, barbeque, and cake and checking out some of the cows. The fun auction had bags of feed, pet supplies, pecan pies, strawberry tarts, baby quilts and lots of other great stuff and raised a good sum to help out 4-H clubs in the county. The children had a great time with the Hol- stein cow bouncy castle. FCC made hal- ter presentations to first year dairy club members in attendance. Our sympathies are extended to the family of Melita Edwards of Kinloss and Lorraine Stanley (Laurence) of London. The Herb and Ada Farrell family pic- nic was hosted by the MacDonald fam- ily at the home of Wilf and Dianne Gamble. About 90 people attended with Aunt Ethel and Aunt Kay getting great visits with the nieces and neph- ews and all. The beach was perfectly calm but cool water didn't deter the swimmers and of course the food was really good too! Heather and Sam Finnie attended the wedding of Any Young and Andrew Hal- lam Saturday the 26th. The wedding was held at Marwanda Estates near Tiverton. Janet and Wayne Rhody enjoyed a visit from their grandson Oliver Larion of Brampton. While he was here they toured the Bruce County Museum at Southampton and the Huron County Museum and Jail at Goderich. Shirley and Doug MacDonald attended the Fiddle Jamboree at Brus- sels. The music was great.
