anniversary with I Dreamed of Rain
Concert scheduled for
April 13

Special to the Signal Star
Spring is around the corner, Earth
Day celebrations are imminent and,
only
recently, World Water Week was
being commemorated.
To top it all off, the
Blyth Centre for the Arts is marking
its 40th Season as a venue for quality
Canadian theatre.
So with all of this to celebrate, the
Blyth Festival Singers present the
inaugural event of the 40th season, I
Dreamed of Rain - a contemporary
concert about water and life, on the
stage of the Blyth Centre for the
Arts.
Musical guests are the St. Marys Chil-
dren's Choir (SMCC) and Festival
Youth
Singers, a community ensemble that
fosters excellence in choral music.
Over its 33 -year history, more than
700 young people have participated in
its
training programs.
SMCC teaches singing technique,
musicianship skills and a
passion for performance through a
modern and broad range of repertoire.
This season the choir presents The
SMCC Singers and introduces a new
choir format
that helps choristers and families to
access all the benefits of group music
making in commitment levels that fit
their schedules.
SMCC welcomes children and youth
of all ages and all levels of vocal
training.
In keeping with the mandate of the
theatre, the centrepiece of the concert
will be a joint performance with the
SMCC Singers of I Dreamed of Rain
and
All the Little Rivers - two great pieces
by Canadian composer Larry
Niclde.
All the Little Rivers was actually com-
missioned for the SMCC
Singers only a few years ago. Expect
a number of Canadian pieces, as well
as songs with an environmental
motif!
The 40 -strong Blyth Festival Singers
with their contemporary and Canadian
repertoire, and the contrasting choral
sounds of youthful voices are sure to
make an amazing combination, so
you won't want to miss this concert.
I Dreamed of RaM begins at 3:00 pm
on April 13 at the Blyth Centre for the
Arts. Tickets are $15 for adults and $6
for children five to 12.
They are available from any Blyth
Festival Singer or through the Blyth
Festival
box office at 519-523-9300 or www.
blythfestival.com
With 450 seats available you may
even be able to get tickets at the door.
Also, mark your calendars for the
Blyth Festival Singers' dinner cabaret
concert and silent auction on May 31,
2014 at the Varna Complex.
"Songs from the Stage" will feature
the remarkable performance skills of
Mark Cassius, a veteran performer of
Stratford and Drayton. Mark has also
appeared on many Toronto stages and
in two Broadway productions including
the 2012 Stratford Festival Broadway
revival of "Jesus Christ Superstar."

An unique partnership may soon be formed allowing
international students to study at Bluewater schools, while
at the same time generating income for the Bluewater Dis-
trict School Board. In a preliminary report to the board,
Superintendent of Education Jean Stephenson explained
Muskoka Language International will act as an agent of
the board and will promote the Bluewater District School
Board to international students. They will also recruit
qualified fee -paying international students and place
those students in Bluewater schools for a school year, as
well as providing full custodianship services and support.
"We are approaching this cautiously," Stephenson said,
saying the board's goal would be to have several interna-
tional students enrolled in Bluewater schools for the 2014-
15 school year. "We plan to pilot the program in the Owen
Sound area."
Director of Education Steve Blake told trustees other
boards across the province have been involved in similar
programs "for many years:'
"We are excited about the potential for additional reve-
nue," Stephenson said, adding the partnership would also
allow the board "to showcase our area to the world" as
well as provide "the cross-cultural benefits" of learning
and living in another country.
