The Liberals of South Huron will

Hensel', on Tuesday of next week. Mr,
M. Y. McLean, of the Seatorth Exposi-
tor, won in the recent bye.eleotion and
he will no doubt again receive the nom-
ination. Mr, MoLean is a good repre-
sentative, an honorable man, and the
Liberals of South Huron can again eleot
him. Mr. MoLean has done good ser -
'vice for the Liberal party for many
years.
The Hon. Sydney Fisher, Dominion
Minister of Agriculture, has to his
credit a mass of good work for the bene-
fit of the farmers of the country. His
persiatenoe and energy in promoting the
praotioal part of his duties are matohless
in the records of former inonmbents of
the portfolio -continually investigating
methods that bring about added profit-
ableness in the operations of the farm.
His introduction of our splendid cold
storage system on ocean steamers has
teen one of the greatest boons to the
farmer ever enjoyed, and jest now Mr,
Fisher is busy carrying out his plan for
putting early Canadian apples on the
British market. These early varieties,
though of snob deliolons quality, are
perishable, and up to this time have
never been attempted to be shipped to
England. But this year Mr. Fisher in-
duced three steamers to open their cold
storage facilities some weeks earlier
than usual by the Government under-
taking to pay for all of the space which
was not taken. The result has been
most satisfactory and the apples
been Doming forward so freely that all
the space In the steamers will likely be
taken up. It is in these lines of effort
for the immediate and practical ad-
vantage of the farmer that the present
Minister has been successful and in
which he is so highly appreciated.-

HOUSE OF REFUGE COMMITTEE
MEETING.
(Clinton New Era.)
The regular quarterly meeting of the
House of Industry and Refuge Com-
mittee was held on Monday. The fore-
noon was employed in inspecting the
building and grounds, the condition of
which presents itself as most satisfac-
tory, and reflects great credit on the
caretaker, Mr. Watch, and the matron.
After viewing the various proposed im-
provements, an ajournment was made
to meet at 1 o'clock in the Rattenbury
House.
Warden McLean presided, and after
reading the minutes cf the previous
regular and special meetings, the meet-
ing was thrown open to free disous-
sion.
In the matter of Peter Sinclair, of
Grey, a recently admitted inmate, it
was decided upon motion, that the Ia-
epector comply with the rules govern-
ing the admission of parties having
means of self•anpport, and which are
further regulated by Provincial Stat-
utes, which stipulates that all proper-
ties, monies or other negotiable papers
be made over to the county.
In the matter of one, Patrick Newton,
Goderioh, that same steps be taken, as
in the foregoing cane, and that other-
wise the applicants be ejected or reject-
ed., as the case may be.
It was the general opinion of the
Committee that ouch cases should be
rejected absolutely, as those who are
materially interested in their care get
no remuneration, inasmuch as the in-
stitution was never built for the accom-
modation of such inmates.
I ispeotor Torrence and keeper Match
Were instructed to install a bathroom
npetetire, in the position most suitable
and convenient.
Tenders were received for grocery
and meat supplies for the last quarter
of the year. W. T. 0 Nail being the
rraooessful tenderer for the former, and
R Fi:rsimons for the latter,
After passing the various bills and
aooaunts, the meeting 'adjjonrued, at the
oar of the clerk.
