LIGHTNING
BY COPPEII ROP.
EXPERIENCES OF THE FARMERS'
MUTUAL INSURANCE
COMPANIES.
($'rota the report of the Fire etar.ha1, newel.
!I
tux, Ohio, March, 1101.) fI
An enormous fire waste that can with ! 1
certainty std comparatively little poet
be reduced to almost nothing is that
from lightning. Inoidental to this sav-
ing of propexty would be a saving of
Rees.
The number of buildings fired by
lightning last year was 154, and the
foss on them $252,447.
For years the violence of thunder-
bolts has been increasing, not because of
there being a greater number of storms,
but because of our decorating Nature's
face with high barns and at the same
time removing her lighning rods, the
forest trees. In ten years the lightning
loss in Maine increased from x$'26,030 to
$123,094. In many Southern States
there has been as great an increase.
However, the number of bnildipge so
fired in Ohio is less than three-fourths as
large in 1907 as in 1906.
This seduction might be credited to
the number of reds up having been in-
oreseed by the efforts of the farm mn•
teal companies; or the fact that "old
line" companies are likely to make a
charge for the lightning. clause in poli-
cies on unrodded buildings, bezause
they have been paying out more than
the premiums on barns; or by the fire
marshal having shown, through the
kindness of the newspapers, that a
quarter of a million dollars would be
saved each summer if buildings were
rodded.
—The Howick Township voters' list
for 1908 has been printed and was first
posted tip in the Olerk'a office at Gorrie
nn Monday last. The list contains 1201
;manes and 645 persons are qualified to
;terve as jurors.

the dry of meeting.
THE NUMBER OF STOR S.
Bat the fact is that there ere, as
shown by the weather bur-. n records,
eleotrical storms reported • , 103 days in
191,6 and cn but 86 day i 1%7. How-
ever, the number of buil • Inge destroyed
dropped 27 per ee • t, an, the storms but
15 per cent.
The farm mut a1s hioh are now
parrying 275 nation: of insurance on
Ohio buildings fi that their losses
from lightning in the summer are two-
thitds as great as from all other causes
in the whole year, In Michigan the
farmers' mutual companies lost in 1906
more than three millions from this
cause.
The last anneal reports of the 111
Iowa mutual .companies show that 75
per cent. of their losses are from light
niug. The Indiana State Association a
year ago diaoussed a plan for assessing
properly rodded buildings at a less
rate. In the forty odd companies rep•
resented in this meeting none has had
a less on a rodded building. A com-
mittee from the Nebraska State Asso-
ciation reported the properly rodded
buil ings never were struck. In that
Sta two thirds of the fire loss on farm
buildings is from lightning,

In a paper before the Ohio Assoaia- 1
tion, Mr. Culver, Secretary of the
Union Mutual (60 per cent. of whose
losses have been by lightning), said:
"Two dollars and a half was the only
money this company ever paid for a
damage to a building that was rodded
since its organization in 1873, but it was
conceded that the rod was not properly
put up." Mr. Culver told of The Light-
ning Rod Mutual Fire Protective
Association of Seville, Ohio, which be-
gan with half a million at risk in July
last; now has 81,200,000 and has not
paid one cent for lightning losses. He
insieted that mutual companies must
make a leas assessment where buildings
rodded or lose the cream of their busi-
nese to companies which insure rodded
buildings only.
The increased demand for rods in
this State so ihcreased the number of
local agents last summer that competi-
tion has probably made the price on
rods fair. There is no rod now offered
in Ohio that is not effective.
The prejudice against lightning rods
which grew out of the I.ractice of the
travelling agents who thirty odd years
ago covered the country with inef-
fective rods, " and written contracts
which 'where often altogether too ef-
fective, is being removed. Now the
agent is a resident of the same neigh-
borhood as his customer or, at farthest,
an ac joining county and must play fair
