Early -week storm temporarily closes schools and roads Super Bowl weekend blast causes havoc Marco Vigliotti Huron Expositor A winter storm packing a punishing combination of snow, brisk winds and frigid temperatures caused havoc on roads in and around Seaforth Monday, prompting numerous school cancella- tions and highway closures. An estimated 25-30 centimetres of snow blanketed a wide expanse of southern Ontario between Sunday and Monday, slowing traffic to a crawl in most areas and leading to hundreds of collisions around the province. Huron County OPP closed a stretch of Highway 8 between Clinton and Mitchell Monday morning because of the adverse conditions, shutting down the region's busiest and arguably most pivotal transportation corridor. The closure left few options for stranded commuters with numerous secondary roadways clogged with snow and barely passable. OPP announced on Twitter that the road reopened at 9:37 a.m. Drivers that braved the blustery con- ditions faced slick roads and reduced visibility caused by the sustained winds. Conditions on Highway 8, how- ever, measurably improved as the morning progressed. Buses and classes at St. James Catho- lic School in Seaforth were cancelled, as were all programs operating at the Seaforth Daycare. All buses at schools in both the public and Catholic boards in the region were cancelled.
