Huron East council pay and expenses down in 2014 Cost of wages and expenses drops to $129,000 Marco Vigliotti Huron Expositor The cost of wages and expenses for Huron East coun- cil members totalled just less than $129,000 in 2014, marking a roughly $14,000 decline from the previous year, according to annual renumeration figures released by the municipality. Council members received a combined $117,775 in honorar- iums and meeting and conven- tion reimbursements, with the remainder paid out for mileage and miscellaneous expenses. Miscellaneous costs include Canadian Pension Plan and Workplace Safety and Insur- ance Board payments, as well as other assorted expenses. As expected, Mayor Bernie MacLellan received the highest level of compensation, earning just shy of $18,600 in 2014 for his work as the municipality's top elected official - about $8,000 of which was for his base honorarium. MacLellan and Coun. Alvin McLellan were the only mem- bers of council to post mileage expenses above $1,000. Coun- cillors Ray Chartrand, Bob Fisher, Nathan Marshall and Larry McGrath filed no mileage claims, though all council members posted at least $51 in miscellaneous expenses. Chartrand was the only councillor to receive less than $1,000 in payment, collecting $940 for his time on council in 2014. Council remuneration fig- ures have jumped considerably in recent years, peaking at a combined total of $142,000 in 2013. In 2002, that figure was about $95,000. Determining a trend line, however, is difficult, with the renumeration amounts varying greatly year -by -year. On average, council mem- bers received between $8,000 and $12,000 for their services in 2014 - slightly less than the annual wages of a part-time, minimum wage worker. Most council members work a full-time job in addition to their legislative duties. KIDS UNDER 10 PAY THEIR AGE ALL WINTER &PPFRruiruit.
