Dear Carol: This is the day, and
this' is the how. all your friends
here have picked- for your shower;
now just sit still and don't get
excited, a little advice will .,keep
you arighted. First, make up your
mind to be a good wife, and love
your husband the rest of your life;
a newly -married couple very hap-
py can be, but to make it com-
plete there Sh t!id he at least three.
Married life can well be corripar-
eel to a brook, With'•many a rock
and many a crook; but all these
things you .must take in their'
stride, life never has been just a
smooth --happy ride. And now I
must tell you the muse has ex-
pired, and, anyway, Carol, , I know
you are .tired; the numerous gifts
we will bring to: your side, and
each bears the message, "'Good
luck to the'bride." Signed on be-
half of your friends and neighbors

f Council tT perat@s
y'Vice-chairp. t,v t ervin Fa1coi er,
op for ,re-election, said that the
past year had been successful, "We
have not always agreed'," he said,
"but wc' received the full co-op-
eration of the council.", 'Although
not fully in favor of a school area
at the start, Mr. Falconer said
that he could see the many ad-
vantages now of an area over
school sections. Many things are
possible with an area, he contin-
ued,. that would never be possible'
with the section method. .
Tribute was paid to the secre-
tary -treasurer, W. P. . Roberts, for
his good work by Mr. 'Falconer.
Mr. Roberts, he pointed out, re-
fused to accept an''incr'ease in sal-
ary offered him by the board this
year. "For a man with no chil-
dren going to school, he shows a
great interest in school affairs,
and is always interested with the
welfare of the board." •
Mr. Falconer concluded by say-
ing that the work of the school
board is big business, but the rate-
payers are, receiving value for dol-
lars spent.
System Needs Awakening
Wilmer Broadfoot, on the board
for six years, said -.he .thought he
would quit this year, even though
he enjoys the work of the board.
"Our education system "must be'
'perked ,up'," he concluded, "if we
are to keep in line with other coun-
tries."
Cleave Coombs, 'starting his sec-
ond year of a two-year term, ex-
pressed appreciation for the sup-
port the rest of -the board had giv-
en him during his first year on,
the board, and expressg_i hope_,tliat.
he could give better service to
the ratepayers next year,,
John Patrick and Clair Haney,
both nominees fa'' -the' school truss
tee positions this year, said they
were not. sure whether they, ,would
let their names stand orwnot.
'Secretary Reports
W. P. Roberts, secretarytreas-
urer of the-school.board, reported
that in actuality' the Eginondville
school addition was paid for and
debt free, as only $2,000 remain-
ed to be paid, and this was the
amount owing in provincial grants.
The scieutlfie -advanceni,ent of
Russia bas brongltt the education.-;
al settop to the' fore, Mr, Roberts',
said, showing the defects, and this
has .people worried, -
The man failing in our' educa-'
tionai system is that -we have fail-

dards; failed to -employ better
methods• and failed tp demand bet-

tinued— Good. ieducation rewires
effort and_ sacrifice , , . it is not
acquired at; a cheap price. Get-
ting teachers at a low wage is a
costly expense in the long run.
Second -Rate Education
We ,have lowered our standards
we have made educationat-
tractive by requiring less • .think-
ing on the part of students ,
the.,end result has placed, us -sec-
ond-rate in :uternational affairs.
We are second-rate in the arts,
science, education and workman-
ship of e •cry type. In recent years
we have given ourselves a dis-
torted sense of . true values, the
secretary scored.
When you lose the sense of true
value, you accept the second-rate.
A second-rate nation cannot and
will not survive, Mr. Roberts said.
Survival is for the fittest.
Living is a challenge—we and
our children can't compete and
meet the challenge of life if we
continue to look for the easy Way,
if we look for the other person to
do the work for -us.
Text Books Shocking?
Life -demands only first-rate in
everything if we- are to survive.
Education • is your responsibility:
You m ct good representa'--
tivesor your school -boards .
you must raise • your standards
. . . you -must have .good teach-
ers you mustehave good tools'
—text books.
"Did you ever examine the pres-
ent 'text books?" the secretary
asked. If and when you do, you're
"in for a .shock," he continued;
we must get aura --books down to
facts if we are to continue to edu-
cate on a high level2We will have
t., ; :, : "scads , of money on
schools" if we neglect them now,
Mr. Roberts concluded.
Representing council on the Sea -
forth District High School Board,
James McIntosh reported higher
salaries were being paid to keep
the high calibre of staff that- is
now engaged at.that institution..,,(
He explained that the board had
been able to' keep the same .mill
rate by dipping into its surplus
for $4,000. The future looks bright
financially, as next.year the final
payment will be made on the sec-
ond last addition to the school.,:
