I y'1, . r1r a,
Once a skip accepts the
premise that it is poor judg-
ment to ask for his lead stone
in front of the rings on the
first end, it does not neces-
sarily follow that he should
pursue this habit if the tide
of battle turns against him in
later ends.
But don't get me wrong! I
do not infer that a deficit of
one or two points provides this
excuse. As long as the game
is reasonably close the first
stone should be swept into
scoring position. Even if the
opposition jumps into a three
or four point lead during the
early stages there is no need
to switch the strategy. Maintain
the offensive and keep your
boys drawing. By so doing you
keep your opponents hitting,
thus giving them little oppor-
tunity to get the feel of draw -
weight.
The exceptions to this rule
are few and in most cases are
applicable to the later stages
of the game when the situation
becomes more desperate and
some change is necessary to
shake the curling confidence of
the opposing team. Let us take
a look at a few of them.
(1) You have scored a single
on the ninth end but still two
or three points down playing
the tenth in a twelve -end
match. Place your first stone
halfway in from the hog, then
hope for a miss or a square hit
so youcan hide .behind the
stone up front. When calling
for a rock up ahead remember
Resources, Loans
And Deposits All
Show Increases
MONTREAL, Nov. 27—Bank
of Montreal resources, deposits
and loans all reached new high
levels in 1961, according to the
bank's 144th annual statement
for the year ended October 31,
published today.
The statement, covering the
most active year's business in
the B of M's history, shows re-
sources increasing 13 per cent
Over 1960—or nearly half -a -bil-
lion dollars—to $3,950 million.
Deposits reached $3,647 mil-
lion, up 14 per cent from the
$3,200 million figure of a year
ago, and total loans rose nine
per cent to a record $1,934
million.
The year's operations of some
890 offices at home and abroad
produced record net earnings
of $14,578,817, an increase of
2.5 per cent over 1960. Taxes,
also at a new high, amounted
to $18,043,791, compared with
$17,352,044 a year ago.
Dividend $2.05
The bank's 22,000 sharehold-
ers are receiving $12,453,750 of
this amount, in dividends total-
ling $2.05 per share—five cents
more than in 1960. The bal-
ance of $2,125,067, plus undi-
vided profits of $1,150,859 from
1960, totals $3,275,926, and to
this amount, the bank has add-
ed $2,000,000 from inner re-
serves, after income taxes,
From the total of $5,275,926
is undivided profits, an amount
of $4,000,000 has been trans-
ferred to the rest account,
bringing it to $145,850,000, and
leaving $1,275,926 to be car-
ried forward.
"Quick" assets are shown at
$2,042 million, an increase of
$270 million compared with
1960, and representing 55 per
cent of B of M liabilities to
the public of $3,742 million,
versus 54 per cent last year.
An increase of almost 30 per
cent in the "acceptances, guar-
antees and letters of credit"
entry, from $59,721,096 last
year to $75,792,918 in the cur-
rent statement, indicates exten-
sive growth in business being
conducted abroad for B of M
customers.
The value of premises is
shown at $63,063,000, an in-
crease of 13 per cent over the
1960 figure of $55,661,000, an
indication of the extent of the
bank's building and moderniza-
tion program.

the tricky runs where stones
are harder to hit.
(2) If your opposing skip is
trigger-happy and inclined to
use the heavy artillery when
two or .three points ahead, try
No. 1 a little earlier in the game
for the sound effects.
(3) Sometimes the ice is
swingy, making sure hitting dif-

WHEN AND WHERE/
et
ficult. Under duress when for-
tunes are fading pull the first
rock up close to the rings. Ex-
cellent bait for an opposing
skip with a defensive complex,
(4) Should your No. 1 be un-
able to hit a barn door at ten
paces and his opposing number
be one of those rare sharp-
shooting leads, throw the book
out the window and put the first
stone out in theront-yard.
(5) Once you hit the extra
end with the trap-door under
your feet you have no alterna-
tive but to use the soft stuff.
Call for a short one and pray
for the breaks!
These are a few of the ex-
ceptions but they represent de-
fensive formations only when
the need is apparent. There is
no excuse to gn "chicken" when
the game is close: but if any-
one who deigns to call himself
a skip tries to pilfer a point
with the scoreboard flattering
him, he should have his license
cancelled. Once the initiative
has been taken, hang onto it.
Get that first chunk of syenite
into the rings and keep your
opponents off balance by main-
taining the pressure. Then
you'll never have to slink home
and sneak in the back door af-
ter the game.
Now for some pointers on
the accompanying illustration:
No. 1—Too easy to hit and
remove. If opponent does hit
and stick it is too far out to
remain ail effective guard.
No. 2—Ideal position for a
rock in front.
No. 3—Good strategy if you
want to tempt the other skip
to hit when his team is draw-
ing well.
Nos. 4 and 5—If there is a
run or fall in the ice, either of
these positions might be pre-
ferable to a stone on centre
line.
No. 6 — On most ice this
guard is too short to draw be-
hind. Yet on swingy ice it
could be perfect.
