COOKIES FOR CHRISTMAS
"While visions of sugarplums
danced in their heads." Children
may well dream of goodies with
the delectable aroma of newly -
baked Christmas cakes and
cookies filtering through the
house.
Throughout the Christian
world, special festive foods have
become part of the Christmas
tradition ... English plum pud-
dings and mincemeat pie , .
Scottish shortbread . Ger-
man stollen.. . . Swedish sprit-
zor and pepporkakor . . . Nor-
wegian julekake, to name just
a few.
Every mother can count on
plenty of "help" from the child-
ren when it comes to cookie bak-
ing. Cutting out cookies seems
to be the delight of children the
world over. Ornaments can be
made from refrigerated slice n'
bake cookies. An infinite variety
of shapes can be created from
the slices.
The word cookie comes from
the Dutch "koekje," a deriva-
tion of koek, meaning little cake.
Decorating sugar cookies with
gaily -colored icing and candied
fruits and nuts arouses the artis-
tic in everyone. These bright
little cookies in Christmas shape
make a pretty picture when
served with pieces of fruit cake,
SAFE STORAGE
FOR VEGETABLES
Handy tips for the success-
ful storage of vegetables for
winter use are given by R. H.
Anderson, of the Canada De-
partment of Agriculture's ex-
perimental farm at Melfort,
Sask.
For instance: Leave t h e
stems on pumpkin, squash and
vegetable marrow and store at
60 ° F. for 10 days before final
storage in a dry place at 40 t
50° F.
Root vegetables should he
stored at 36 to 38° F. in dry
sand if the storage is damp,
and in slightly dampened sand
if the storage is dry.
Dry onions thoroughly at
high temperatures and keep
them in shallow boxes in a dry
atmosphere at 33 to 40° F.
Store potatoes in slatted bins
at 38 to 40° F, and do not ex-
pose them to light.
Store a few cabbages by
suspending them by the roots;
for Iarger quantities use slat-
ted shelves and remove the
roots and outer leaves.
All vegetables intended for
use from storage should first
be sound, dry and mature and
if some do not keep well de-
spite all precautions, the fault
may be with, the variety.

drop cookies and bars.
Recipes follow for a spicy
cookie, which keeps well, and
also an inexpensive drop cookie
with a favorite flavor fo young-
sters -peanut butter.
Yuletide is a festive season,
with parties and casual visiting.
Apart from the time-honred
fancily feasts, it offers a won-
derful opportunity for informal
entertaining.

To find the North Star (Pol-
aris) look for the two stars in
the front of the cup of the Big
Dipper. Draw a Iine through
them and extend that line away
from the bottom of the cup.
About one dipper length away
you will come to a fairly lonely
star of moderate brightness lo-
cated in the end of the handle
of the Little Dipper. This is
Polaris.
The Mammoth, a huge, hairy,
elephant -like animal roamed the
northland thousands of years
ago. Ancient mammoth bones
are found, together with the
remains of bison, borse and
giant bear in the gold -bearing
gravel of the Western Yukon.
