FURROW AND FALLOW (By FAIRBAIRN) Top agricultural officials from all over Canada met recently in Ottawa at what has become an annual event — the Dominion - Provincial Agricultural Confer- ence. Discussions of this kind cannot 'help being useful to Canadian farmers and especial- ly to those who are fortunate enough to attend but it is some- times hard to see the direct benefits to farmers as a whole. Perhaps it is too much to ex- pect that any immediate and tangible results should be ap- parent. We wonder, for example, whether any legislation is pos- sible throughout the country to ensure that any farmer from Newfoundland to Vancouver Island could get spare parts for farm machinery in a hurry when he needs them? We won- der whether this very basic problem is being discussed? The Ontario Federation of Ag- riculture passed a couple of resolutions regarding this at its recent meeting and we under- stand suggestions for a provin- cial act have been presented to the Ontario Department of Ag- riculture but will anything be done about it? Former Ontario Minister of Agriculture Goodfellow, in what turned out to be his swan song despite his protestations, told the same OFA meeting that one of the vital problems requiring solution concerns farm assess- ment. It wouldn't surprise us if that was discussed at the Ot- tawa meeting and it's to be hoped that something will be done about that. Now, these are very funda- mental points that every Cana- dian farmer is vitally interest- ed in. They concern him per- sonally much more than some academic discussions about mar- keting or production—import. ant though they may be. An important matter that did come up was the Federal Govern- ment's dairy policy. The Cana- dian Federation of Agriculture in its presentation urged the early enactment of the new policy proposed recently by Dairy Farmers of Canada. If this happens it will affect milk producers everywhere but it won't be this year—the next dairy year starts in May, 1962, Dairy Farmers asked for a 14c per pound consumer sub- sidy - on butter and a 50c sup- port price in place of the pres- ent 64c with a deficiency pay- ment to cream producers so their returns would not be dras- tically reduced. They also ask- ed for a thorough overhaul of fluid milk quota systems to re- duce surplus production and a limitation of supports on manu- facturing milk to this year's level of production. These would be definite steps to lim- it production that no govern- ment will take without some very clear indications of pro - Urge Dry TornOs''' Before Waxing The secret of avoiding Ort, colors and rote in waxe4 tux.. nips lies in the preparatory washing and drying, according to Dr. J. F. Bradbury, of the Canada Department of Agricul- ture's research laboratory at Vineland, Qnt. When washed in a tank, tur- nips are liable to accumulate bacteria. Dr. Bradbury suggests spray washing, disinfecting the tur- nips with a chlorine -type pre- paration, and drying within 12 hours on racks in a well -ven- tilated drying room equipped with fans and separated from the washing plant. Periodical disinfection of con- veyors, drying racks, storage bins and trimming tables— everything which the turnips touch—is also necessary, Don't forget to spread straw or manure over the shallow parts in water lines, reminds Professor R. W. Irwin, Ontario Agricultural College engineer. Otherwise they might freeze. Tile lines emptying from septic tanks sometimes freeze where they run under roadways. This might be prevented by cover- ing them with straw. ?), - 711,14.11171394,14P 4 A.T*40041MIA P110,4 McGAVINS' FARM EQUIPMENT Are Distributors For the Fartious' NUFFIELD DISEL TRACTORS By dealing direct with the Manufacturer, these, popular Diesel Tractors can be sold for less than regular Moline operated tractors.
