The program is heard Monday afternoons on the Trans -Canada network. The village yarner, Jimmy Come Easy, right, reminisces with Captain Andy on some of the light-hearted problems that befall him in retirement. Jim- my. Came Easy is played by David Murray and Cap'n Andy by Bill Fulton. Doorway Decorating Hints for This Christmas The ring of the doorbell, and the muffled tread of feet on the porch is a happy sound, for at Christmas is the time when we especially welcome friends and relatives. And what better way to express hospitality than in decorations for your front door? The front entrance of your home is the ocal point of attention and should be the first part to be decoraibed in any progressive plan to decorate, by stages, the exterior of your home. The traditional, C hr i s t m a s wreath hung on the front door will always be in style, for it is one of the most widely used symbols of Christmas hospital- ity. There are many new and interesting ways to use wreaths of various materials for your front door, but one of the most attractive is still the simple wreath of evergreen boughs with a bright Christmas red ribbon, hung on the centerline of the door, about three quarters of the distance up. The whole ef- fect can be enhanced greatly by mounting an outdoor floodlight where it can be trained on the doorway to enhance its archi- tectural lines. If purchasing a floodlight for this purpose, make sure it is weatherproof. Use floodlight kits that include a weatherproof 100 - or 150 -watt lamp, a holder de- signed to permit either ground r011°1001'r.07Yr00'r..0'r.,ar.. r,a` ' r .,,,' r ,4 r „,` r .,A r .,,,' r .,n' t ,e ,,,r r ,fi° r .,A,rW r ..n` r r ., ' "(4,c 9tiattesu"eEPLEA BIBLES for Christmas Giving Our selection also in- cludes Hymnary and Books of Praise. tti TOYS - DOLLS and CARRIAGES Distinctive Gifts - Books - Game,' Including Hockey, Crokinole and Monopoly Games the whole family may enjoy ! You can choose lamps in clear glass, or in blue, green, red, yellow or pink, depending on the effect you wish to create. A more elaborate type of door decoration might be created if you have a covered porch. In this case it is easy to place evergreen boughs under the cornice of the porch roof, and entwine them with strings of outdoor Sparkle lights, to give a bright, gay appearance, or the softer Glow lights, for a quieter effect. And if you are lucky enough to have two evergreen trees flanking the porch steps, or your front door, they can con- ceal two floodlights, one on eith- er side, that throw their beams upward to bathe the entire en- trance area in an interesting pattern of light and shadow. The trees could also be decorated with strings of outdoor Sparkle (which have a clear glass) or Glow lights (which have an opaque glass) to add to the beauty of the doorway. Lighted candles are a lovely addition to any doorway decora- tion as a symbol of the Christ- mas spirit. Candles can be eas- ily made from sections of pipe, plastic or mailing tubes, etc., and wired with an outdoor string and a red Sparkle light 'bulb for the "flame". A section of ply- wood, cut to shape and painted can be mounted on either side of the doorway, to make a simple frame of lighted candles. Don't forget that your home and grounds will be viewed in the daytime as well as at night, so try to conceal as much as possible the floodlights, wires and extension cords not intend- ed for display. Christmas time is also a time for common sense in using electricity outdoors. It is per- fectly safe, but some simple pre- cautions will not detract one bit from the pleasure of creating a beautiful decorative effect for your home. Be sure that your strings and sockets are express- ly for outdoor use Sockets should be all plastic, with plas- tic claps to ensure a firm attach- ment to evergreen boughs ,and other material. If exposed to CRANBROOK AUXILIARY The November meeting of the Cranbrook Evening Auxiliary was held at the home of Mrs. Stuart Stevenson with 11 mem- bers present. The leader, Mrs. Nelson, opened the meeting and led in prayer. Scripture, 'St. Luke, chapter 11, verses 38-42, was read by Marilyn Engel. The meditation was read by Mrs. Nelson. "Recipe for Happiness" was read by Grace Evans, The meeting was turned over to the president. Minutes of the last meeting were read and the roll call answered with a Re- membrance Day verse. The cor- respondence was read. Collec- tion was taken by Helen Smith. The sunshine collection was tak- en by Eleanor Stevenson. It was decided to have a gift exchange at the December meeting. Plans were made for the December meeting to be held at the home of Mrs. Nelson. Topic, "The House Blew A- way”, was read by Isobel Hue - tiler. A hymn was sun; followed by prayer by Mrs. Nelson. A lunch was served by the hostess assisted by Iscbel lluether and Betty Knight. Neighbor: "My wife is pro- longing her holiday. I need her at home but it seems useless to suggest that she return." Other neighbor: "Get one of the neighbors to suggest it." PITTER PATTER OF LITTLE FEET One pair of meadow mice may have as many as 17 litters a year, each averaging five young. If all the mice from this pair survived and reproduc- ed to maximum capacity, there would be a grand total of more than one million within one year. It would take 23 million pounds of vegetable matter to feed this one thriving family for one year. Fortunately, mice are a tasty 'dish to a number of birds and animals — owls, skunks, weasels, foxes, snakes and hawks. COAL and FUEL OIL Wm. M. Hart Phone 784 • Seaforth ALL KINDS of INSURANCE W. E. Connections between strings should either be taped with a waterproof tape, or hung in such a way that water cannot seep in. Don't overload the electrical circuits of your house. If a fuse blows, replace it with a new one of the same amperage, us- ually 15 amperes, and reduce the load by disconnecting some of the appliances and lights in the house that are on the same circuit. Never use substitute materials for fuses. Basement or attic circuits are the best sources for outdoor lighting cir- cuits, since they are not norm- ally in use as much as the liv- ing areas of your home. Many new homes have a special ex- terior circuit installed which brings convenient power to an outdoor Christmas display, sum- mer lawn party decorations, and to operate power garden tools. Above all, have lots of fun in decorating this year. Remem- ber that it's best to start early to plan your Christmas decora- tions. WORLD WITHOUT AIR Our earth will probably af- ter many millions of years, be- come a dead world like the moon. Little by little it is Los- ing its atmosphere, its mole- cules of air and without air there can be no life. Probably the moon once had an atmosphere like our own. Because its gravitational pull is New Telephone Directory Out New telephone directories by the dozens are now in the hands of telephone users in Seaforth and surrounding territory. W. W. Haysom, Bell Tele- phone manager for this region, said this week that about 35,- 770 copies of the 1961 directory will be distributed throughout the area served by the Strat- ford-Goderich directory. Telephone users in Seaforth will receive 1,525 copies of the 1961 telephone book, compared with 1,510 a year ago. "Use your new directory," Mr. Haysom said. "Continued use of the old one may lead to wrong numbers since the new book contains many new and changed listings." Mr. Haysom said that a good way to avoid confusion and wrong number because of changed and new listings is for each subscriber to bring his Blue Book of Telephone Num- bers or other personal lists of numbers, up to date and to consult them before placing a call. Extra copies of the Blue Book, in two sizes, may be ob- tained from any Bell business office. A feature of the front cover of this year's directory is a sketch of the harbor at Gode- rich. This drawing replaces the illustration of the Shakespeare- an Festival Theatre at Strat- ford, which appeared on last year's book. The Stratford-Goderich direc- tory also serves Hensall, Clin- ton, Mitchell, Monkton, Tavi- stock, Listowel and St. Marys. less than the earth's, it could hold molecules of air to it for so long a time as the earth can.
