Ilere George Mclllwain, retail manager, and Mel Acheson, plant superintendent, examine the new machine. (Expositor photo by Phillips). New Machine Doubles Topnotch Pellet Output Installation of a modern Cali- fornia pelleting machine by Topnotch Feeds Limited, Sea - forth, makes available to dis- trict farmers a greater variety of sizes of feed pellets. The new machine, which went into production a short time ago, 'doubles the pellet produc- tion capacity of the mill. Driv- en by a 100 -horsepower motor, the pelleting machine converts bulk feeds into 'pellets at the rate of eight tons an hour, Biggest advantage, according to George Mcllwain, retail man- ager here, is that production of larger pellets of %-inch is now possible. This fills a require- ment for farmers feeding beef and dairy cattle and hogs. The 5/32 -size, so popular with hog producers, will continue to be available. In addition to eliminating waiting for pellets, the new LAY CORNERSTONE FOR NEW STRATFORD HEAD OFFICE BUILDING The foundation stone of the new head office building of British Mortgage & Trust Com- pany, 1 Ontario St., Stratford, was laid on Oct. 5 by W. H. Gregory, President of the Com- pany. The brief ceremony was attended by representatives of provincial -and municipal gov- ernments, members of the Board of Directors, and other guests. The stone of Portland lime- stone from the south of Eng- land, is set in the wall adjacent to the main entrance. Inside the stone is a sealed copper box in which Mr. Gregory placed silver and copper coins of 1961, a copy of the charter of the original company, the British Mortgage and Loan Company, dated Oct. 5, 1877; minutes of the first meeting of the com- pany, held July 16, 1877, and of the first meeting after the charter was granted, October 11, 1877; the last three annual reports of the Company; a bro- chure of the Stratford Shake- spearean Festival for 1961; the Chamber of Commerce brochure for the present year; copy of Stratford Beacon - Herald ; a photograph of the model of the new building and of the pres- ent head office building, and a photograph of those taking part in the ceremony. Wilfred P. Gregory, Q.C., managing director and execu- tive vice-president, was in charge of the ceremony. J. Fred Edwards, MPP, Palmer- ston, extended congratulations and best wishes to the Com- pany. Mayor C. H. Meier, Strat- ford, said that the new build- ing would add a great deal to the appearance of the city's business district. In laying the stone, W. H. Gregory called on Don Smith, president of the firm of Ellis - Don, to . prove the angles and levels of the 'stone. When this was done, the trowel was pre: sented to Mr. Gregory by Fred Rounthwaite on behalf of him- self and Robert Fairfield, archi- tects of the new building. Mr. Gregory reviewed the history of cornerstones. At one time, he said, the strength of the building depended on the stone. It was a point of bearing for the walls and gave symmetry to. the whole building. Today's methods of construction have changed all that. This buliding is of reinforced concrete and is of a strength surpassing an- cient stone. Laying a foundation stone is not necessary today, Mr. Gregory said, but its use is revered and the practice con- tinued. He commented, too, on the fact that the stone was laid on the Company's 84th birth- day—the original charter hav- ing been granted to the Com- pany on October 5, 1877.
