Name Delegates To
Chatham Meeting
The Catholic Women's League
of St. James' parish held their
meeting Tuesday in St. James'
School Hall. Father Sullivan op-
.ened the meeting by saying a
prayer, and Mrs. J. McConnell
played music for thehymn in
honor of Our Lady, Mary.
The minutes were read by Mrs.
J. Kelly. Mail was recorded by
Mrs. J. Flannery, and Mrs. Cooper
gave the treasurer's report.
Mrs. G. Reynolds, as president,
welcomed the new executive and
gave thanks to the officers of the
past years. New conveners are:
Entertainment, Mrs. Alice `Stiles;
library, Mrs. Clarence Malone;
magazines, Mrs. Verdun Rau; dec-
orations, Mrs. Gerry McCourt and
Mrs. Art Devereaux; spiritual, Mrs.
J. Meagher; press, Miss Rita Dun-
can. The parish visiting commit-
tee for May is Mrs. J. McConnell
and Mrs. J. L. Slattery. The lunch
committee is Miss M. Dunn.
The diocesan convention is in
Chatham on May 16 and 17. Mrs.
G. Reynolds and Mrs. Jim Dev-
ereaux will be delegates.
Catholic Women's League mem-
bers will be official adorers for
the Blessed Sacrament this First
Friday of May. The Sisters of St.
Joseph, who care for the altar,
will be pleased of garden flowers
when we have them. Father Sul-
livan gave his good wishes to the
old and the new executives and
presented the sipiritual thought
for the month.
The Catholic Women's League
will act as Hostesses for the ban-
quet of the sacrificial offertory
campaign on May 13. St. James'
Youth Club members will be glad
to act as baby sitters, so everyone
will be free to attend. Mrs. Art
Devereaux and Mrs. J. L. Slattery
-greed to plan the entertainment.
The rectory tea is on June 14.
Conveners are Mrs. J. Maloney
and Mrs. Jim Devereaux. Mrs.
Michael Williams and Mrs. J.
Kelly will look after bake sales.
Mrs. G. Reynolds volunteered to
make the anniversary cake; liTrs.
Alfred Halpin and Mrs., Joseph
Deyereaux will decorate it.
The mystery prize was won by
Mrs, Jim Devereaux. Father Sul-
livan gave his blessing to all pres-
ent, and the meeting was adjourn-
ed after the closing prayers,
1895 Fire Razes
(Continued from Page 8)
and soaked with water. Mr. John
Smith's carriage shop was also
scorched and he will lose consid-
erable by the removal of his stuff.
Mr. A. Davidson had an insurance
of $7,000 on his buildings, while
Mr. Bishop had $2,000 insurance
on the furniture. The other losers,
except Messrs. Logan and Greig,
had also more or less insurance.
"The origin of the fire at pres-
ent seems a mystery, as there had
been no fire in the billiard room,
where the fire started, for a couple
of days. About 2 o'clock the hostler
at the hotel stables had gone to
the stable to get out a rig, but no
fire was visible then. Night watch-
man Gillespie had also been in
that vicinity only a short time be-
fore the fire broke out. The fire-
men deserve great praise for the
hard brave work which they did,
and had they been less willing and
worked less efficiently, the results
would have been much more ser-
ious. Engineer Roberts also did
his part well by keeping up a
strong steady pressure during the
entire, progress of the fire, although
the firemen had four streams go-
ing all the time."'
