Smyth Shoe Store Moves
To New Accommodation
Special features have been plan-
ned to mark the opening this week
of new accommodation for Smyth's
Shoes. The store will open for the
first time Thursday morning in the
building which ,was recently pur-
chased, and in which extensive
alterations have been carried out.
Smyth's Shoes have carried on
business in Seaforth since 1959,
when the long established business
of the late C .E .Smith was pur-
chased. The present move to new
accommodation makes available a
much larger display area, and will
result in greater convenience to
the many customers of the store.
son, George Smyth. Other stores
are located in Mitchell, Stratford
and Exeter.
Mr. Smyth, Sr., was born in Ire-
land, where on graduation from
school he learned the shoe busi-
ness. In 1923 he came to Canada,
and after spending some time in
Toronto moved to Brodhagen,
where he operated a general store.
In 1946 he moved to Mitchell and
established the first in what was
to become a chain of retail shoe
outlets. The Exeter store was op-
ened in 1954; the Seaforth store in
1959, and the Stratford store a
The new accommodation is lo-
cated in what until recently has
been the law offices of McConnell
and Stewart. Previously, the build-
ing had been the location of the
Province of Ontario Savings Of-
fice. One of the larger 'buliding
blocks in Seaforth, it was erected
about 90 years ago by a pioneer
Seaforth merchant, Thomas Kidd.
A feature of the opening event
will be a draw for valuable priz-
es. The draw will take place Sat-
urday' afternoon.

George Smyth is in charge of the
Stratford store.
The manager of the Seaforth
store is Allan Tyndall, who is as-
sisted by his wife Robina.
"Our purpose in moving to a
larger store is to provide the peo-
ple of the Seaforth area with the
best possible service," Mr. Smyth
said. "We will continue to make
available a full line of medium
and high price shoes for every
member of the family."
SEAFORTH BEAVERS IN TROUBLE
WHEN MOUNT FOREST WINS 9-3
The Seaforth Beavers took a 9-3
beating from the Mount Forest
team on Friday evening. It was
the first game of a 4 -out -of -7 ser-
ies in WOAA Intermediate "C"
playoffs.
The Mount Forest club were
ahead 5-1 at the end of the first,
with Beuttenmiller scoring for the
Beavers. The second period was

much closer with each team scor-'
ing two goals; both goals for the
Beavers were scored by Scoins.
The third period saw Mount For-
est score two unanswered goals,
to round out the game at 9-3.
The Beavers were without the
services of "Whitey" Broome and
Bill Eisler, and also their coach,
Bill Wylie. The club hopes, with
their help,. that the next meeting
of these two clubs will end up
better for the Beavers.
The next games are as follows:
Friday, March 10, in Mount For-
est; Monday, March 13, in Sea -
forth; Wednesday, March 15, in
Seaforth; Friday, March 17, in
Mount Forest, if necessary. Game
time is 8:30.
The Friendship Circle of First
Presbyterian Church met at the
home of Mrs. George Miller Wed-
nesday, March 1. Mrs. Elmer Riv-
ers opened the meeting with a
poem, "A Tested Recipe," follow-
ed by a prayer. ,
During the business meeting it
was decided to collect clothes for
the new babies and their mothers
at Armagh Hall, also children's
clothes for the Children's Aid So-
ciety in Goderich. An invitation
was received to attend the thank -
offering of the Barbara Kirkman
on March 28, at 8:15 in the church.
The next meeting will be held
March 29, in the church, to pack
clothes parcels; the change of
date is for this month only. The
roll call was answered by the
name of a woman from the New
Testament.
The devotional part of the meet-
ing was opened with a poem hymn
and a prayer given by Mrs. Nor-
man Ranson. Mrs. Ken Willis
read the scripture from Luke 2.
Mrs. John Carnochan conducted a
contest on the Women of the New
Testament, after which the group
began their study of these women,
beginning with Mary, Mother of
Christ.
The hostess, assisted by Mrs.
William Flood and Mrs. Bedford
Dungey, served a lovely lunch.

STYLING BIG FACTOR
Not in generations has the shoe
industry been so conscious of styl-
ing.
Though almost a decade has
passed since women swung away
from the round toe, a move that
placed Canadian shoe styling in
the fashion lead on this continent,
and though designers here and in
Europe are gropingfor something
new, no alternativto the pointed
toe has as yet been found.
Trial Balloons
The Shoe Information Bureau of
Canada . suggests, however, that
women can now expect to be sub -
lot of new fashion- ideas
—ase was d to ademonstrated by talk of
round and square and duckbill
shoe shapes following the Paris
collections. Such idea, says the
Bureau, should be ,regarded with
a liberal dash of skepticism and
recognized for what they are—
possible trial balloons on one hand,
or on the other, traffic -stopping de-

mediate relation to current fash-
ion trends.
Fashion is always changing and
ideas may come from any place.
Inspirations may be crystallized in
Paris .or in Italy, and trends trans-
lated throughout the world. Shoe
fashions don't change overnight,
The casual and street shoe cate-
ries have seen in squared offfelt et seon mid -
heels. as
heels.
The fact that the American shoe
industry is following Canada's lead
into even finer toes indicates that
no change is on the horizon for a
while. Spring shoes are already
going out to meet the customer.
Those for fall '61 will soon be in
production — the slim, elongated
line the finely pointed dress shoe
is what women will be seeing, both
here and in the U.S.
As to heels, there is great di-
versification in heights and shapes.
The ultra fine and ultra high share
the spotlight this spring with doz-
ens of lower heel types, all the
way down to the slim little jet and
new flattie shapes. Stacked heels
run from high and slim on dressy
street and spectator styles down
to medium and lower for tailored
wear and walking. The news in
dress heels is in the trend toward
a flared base and the development
of tempered steel';to produce in-
creased strength.
Matte and smooth calfskin, pat-
ent and lustre in that order are
the most important materials for
spring. Latest word on color goes
like this: Black, the bone shades,
sprindrift green, lavender to
mauve, watermelon and hot pinks,
yellow to gold, a lighter, livelier,
brighter blue. White will figure
strongly for summer, especially in
lustre leathers.
