Huron Union (Continued from Page 1) this class: 96 were successful in completing grade 9, or 78 per cent; 70 were successful in completing Grade 10, or 58 per cent; 52 were successful in completing Grade 11, o'r 43 per cent; 38 were successful in completing Grade 12, or 31 per cent; 9 were successful in com- pleting Grade 13, or 71/2 per cent. There are 11 students repeating Grade 13 and it is hoped that some 'of these pupils will manage to gain their Grade 13 this term. From the figures we have given we feel the onlr conclusions we can draw are that either the sub- jects offered do not appeal to the students, or 'that they are not cap- able of higher education, Perhaps thece conclusions would not be completely correct nor com- pletely wrong. We must search further to find what we believe is a sound conclusion. Ifon the one hand we could increase our graduates of Grade 13 to 50 per cent of our Grade 9 enrolment and we find that they would desire entering University, we doubt if such accommodation modat on is or could be made available at University level, On the other hand, we hear a great deal of concern being ex- pressed at our shortage of skilled tradesmen in our country, with the result that a number of our industries are finding it neces- sary to encourage the immigra- tion authorities to bring people with skills from other countries, At the same time,'we have great numbers of unemployed people in our country that are becoming an increasing burden on our econ- omy- as well as being a great waste of human resource. We, Therefore, suggest to you, Mr. Minister, that a comprehen- sive survey be taken in Huron County to determine whether the situation we have drawn to your attention would justify the estab- lishing of a school in our county to train those students, that are not potential University students, in the modern skills and trades that will prepare them to fill posi- tions in -our present illydustrial world." RED CROSS MEETING The regular meeting of the Red Sross Society will be held in the Library rooms on Friday, Mar. 3. Canadian Red Cross Disaster Services provided emergency as- sistance for 12,018 men, women and children Last year. Most were victims of fires. ANNOUNCE .OBJECTIVE OF $1,200 AS EASTER SEAL CAMPAIGN OPENS While the annual Easter Seal campaign didn't open officially un- til Wednesday, an anonymous donation of $35, received several days in advance, set the pace for donations, according to commit- tee chairman Len Ford. The Easter Seal campaign is conducted by the Seaforth Lions Club on behalf of the Ontario So- ciety for Cripple Children. The objective this year is $1200. Approximately 1900 envelopes containing seals are being mailed this year and should be -in the hands of area recipients within the next few days, Total mailing this year has been increased by some 500 additional names to assist in reaching the objective of $1,200. In discussing the campaign, the chairman stressed that should any. resident of Seaforth or area not receive seals, these may be ob- tained from and donations accept- ed by any member of the Lions Club. ' Fire Fund Remains Open While it had been announced that the fund established to aid victims of a recent fire in Sea - forth had been closed, requests from persons who had not had an opportunity ' of contributing, has resulted in the account being left open for the ` time being.
