21 CHILDREN AID PARENTS
TO MARK 50th ANNIVERSARY
When Mr. and Mrs. James
Masse, St. Joseph, decided to take
the big step away back in 1910 they
had the feeling that it might be
the start of something big. And it
was.
Sunday they celebrated their
50th wedding anniversary at their
small, modest home at St. Joseph,
and greeted a few of their eleven
daughters and ten sons, who along
with more than 150 sons-in-law,
daughters-in-law and grandchil-
dren, give them the well-earned
honor of having the largest living
family in Canada.
"It's been a very active and a
happy life for us," Mrs. Masse ob-
served and was ,seconded by her
husband who declared that "we're
just as happynow as we were when
we.got married."
While both Mr. and Mrs. Masse
voiced happiness over the results
of their long years together, they
were a little disappointed that all
their brood couldn't be on hand for
the big occasion.
"We intended to have a big re-
union," Mrs'. Masse said, "but I
took sick awhile back and we felt
ing. Father Jordan is the son of
Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Jordan, De-
troit, and the grandson of the late
James Jordan, who was postmas-
ter in Dublin for 30 years. Among
those attending the Mass here
were: Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Jordan,.
Mrs. William Byrne; -Mrs. Leo Bol-
ger, Detroit; Mr. and Mrs. Lyle
Jordan and John Webber, Toronto,
and Mrs. Jean Fortune, Seaforth.
the strain wouldn't be good for
me. But we intend to have an-
other big reunion sometime in the
near future—and besides, my chil-
dren keep dropping in at various
times during the year."
Mrs. Masse admitted Sunday if
the entire family had dropped in
to pay a social call "all at once"
there would have been just enough
room_for them in the entire village,
"let alone ,bny home." If such an
event had taken place the most
likeliest spot in the village would
have been the Zurich Arena, Mrs.
Masse said.
A very welcome daughter at the
Masse home Sunday was Mrs. Fred
Turnbull, of Florida, who came all
the way from the sunshine state
just for the occasion. Accompany-
ing her were three daughters, Bon-
nie, 10, Sharline 5, and Gary 3.
Other daughters present includ-
ed Mrs. Morris (Florence) Den-
omme, of Dashwood, and Mrs.
Percy (Marie) Bedard, of RR 2,
Zurich. Both members of the
Masse tradition have held their
own when it comes to raising chil-
dren, with six and 12 respectively.
Mr. Masse,•70, and Mrs. Masse,
68, have become well-known an a
result of their large family.
In July, 1937, when the family
was living at Drysdale, the late
Most Rev. John T. Kidd, Bishop
of London, bestowed a blessing on
them from Pope Pius XI.
The last of the 21 Masse chil-
dren, Peter, 23, was married in
September, 1957.
