- This four-bedroom bungalow de-
sign by architect Jacques Vincent,
of $te. Dorothee promises luxur-
ious living for tiie larger family.
Utilizing a complete bedroom wing,
it has complete privacy for the
sleeping area as well as ample.
closet space.
A feature of the interior plan is
the master bedroom with its priv-
ate bathroom, dressing room and
double clothes closet. Other eye-
catching provisions in the design
are the large, well -lighted living
room which can be shut .off from
the diking room by a wooden ac-
cordion door; the generous kitchen
with space for dining and a built-
in area for a washer and dryer;
the screened flagstone porch which
provides a covered walk between
the kitchen and garage and the
large coat closet with built-in table
adjoining the front entrance. The
basement is partitioned into four
sections allowing for ftirnace and
laundry rooms as well as a large
games room and storage area.
The total floor area is 1,662
square feet and the exterior dimen-
sions are 58 feet by 47 feet. Work-
ing drawings for the house, Design
804, may be obtained from Central
Mortgage and Housing,
EASY DOES IT — Window sashes are sometimes fitted with glass before installa-
tion, but glazing is often carried out on the site. With wooden sash care should be tak-
en not to damage the edges of the frame.
ADVENTURE IN BUILDING
lei
Care Required in Adjusting
Window Frames and Sash
This is the 22nd in a series
of articles by Central Mortg-
age and Housing Corporation,
Federal housing agency, on
building a house.
When nailing wooden window and
door frames in place, care should
be taken to avoid hammer marks.
Disfigurements of this sort are dif-
ficult .to conceal and are a con-
tinuing blemish on a finished sur-
face. .
A -precision-made wooden sash
often has- a 'tendency to bind to
the frame when exposed to exces-
sive moisture. This may result
from insufficient priming. Once the
window frames and sash have been
given the required three coats of
paint the tendency of .the wood to
swell is greatly reduced. Until the
sashes are painted or some other
type of moisture repellant has been
applied, the house should be kept
as dry as possible. Prolonged
rainy periods may lead to marked
swelling in wood that has not been
properly moisture -proofed. More-
over, until the basement floor has
been laid, a certain amount of
dampness can be expected through-
out the house.
Plastering should be postponed
until finish wood surfaces have
been waterproofed. A great deal of
water is used in plastering a house`
and some of it will be absorbed by
the wood if it has not been pro-
perly treated,
Woodwork should be dry before
putting a plane to it. Otherwise,
when the wood loses its moisture
doors and sashes will not fit snug-
ly. A gap of as much as a quar-
ter of an inch may appear between
the door and the door frame after
the wood has dried out.
During the summer months win-
dow sash is often not glassed -in or
"glazed" immediately. If the•sash
is installed temporarily before
NOTICE TO PARENTS!!
A dangerous situation is being created on No. 8
Highway, opposite .the entrance to the Lions
Park, as a result of children leaving their bicycles
along the edge of the Highway.
ADEQUATE FACILITIES EXIST FOR
BICYCLES. WITHIN THE PARK !
Children on bicycles should use the east entrance.
The co-operation of parents is requested in im-
pressing on their children the fact that bicycles
must,be properly parked.
Children who persist In leaving their bicycles at
the west entrance, in the interestsof highway
safety, may be denied the use of the Park as long
as the practise continues.
SEAFORTH LIONS PARK
glazing, care should be taken not
to mark the fraile or the sash
with the tool used in removing it.
These precautions are all the more
necessary when the sash and frame
'are of soft -textured wood, such as
white pine, often used for this pur-.
pose.
Some builders nail a piece of
rough lumber to windows and ex-
terior door sills to prevent dam-
age'aur' ag construction. This is
good prac tice, provided it is done
carefully. Only fnishing nails
should be used and nail holes
should afterwards be puttied over
to remove tell-tale marks.
Sash balances are needed for
double -hung windows. There are
a number of devices for this pur-
pose, spring balance probably be:
ing the most widely used today.
The older cord\and pulley has fall-
en into disuse with the introduc-
tion of simpler types of frames.
Many builders favour balances
with a leaf spring since they are
inexpensive, simple to install, and
are not conspicuous. Factory -built
sash and frame units often come
equipped with their own balancing
devices.
It is useful to have both lower
and top sash fitted with balances.
A slight additional expense is in-
volved but many homeowners con-
sider the extra convenience well
worth it.
Factory -built sash equipped with
weather-stripping is also becoming
increasingly popular. Weather-
stripping the windows provides ad-
ditional insulation for your house
and prevents heat loss at these
points. If weather-stripping is be-
ing put on by the builder, the job
can be postponed until the house
is nearing completion.
Storm sash and screens, if or-
dered at the same time as the
regular sash, should be given a
priming coat of paint when receiv-
ed, then stored in a dry place. If
they are properly stacked there
should be no danger of the wood
warping. At the first opportunity,
however, after deciding on the ex-
terior colors for the house, the
Storm ash should be given three

Mary Ann Stokes, four-year-old
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur

extensive burns to her body on
Monday afternoon when she fell in-
to a bonfire and her clothing was
ignited. The child was rushed to
the Wingham General Hospital,
where she was treated by Dr. W.

Haying Accident •
Mr.. Harvey McDowell, Auburn,
met with a painful accident on
Monday while cutting hay with his
tractor on his farm in East Wa-
wanosh Township. Leaving the
tractor out of gear, he was stop-
ped while fixing the mower before
starting to cut. In some way it
started to move forward on the
slant of a hill. Running to stop the
tractor, his foot slipped on the
running board of the tractor and
the guards of the mower pierced
him above the knee. He was driag-
ged until the tractor was stopped
by the fence. Dr. Corrin was call-
ed and Mr. McDowell was remov-
ed to the hospital.—Goderich Sig-

Not Fault Of Authority
Damage claims by cottage own-
ers at Port Franks against the
Ausable Authority have been dis-
missed by a board of engineers, it
was revealed at an ARCA execu-
tive `meeting fast, week. In a unani-
mous decision, the- board stated
that the cause Ref shallow' water
near the mouth ,of the river in 1958
was the Iow lake level. The report
pointed out that the lake level 'in
midsummer of -958 was four feet
below that of 1952, when the com-
plainants acquired cottage,-, lots
along the old river bed. The cot-
tage owners, William Weir and
Robert Greensides, claimed $4,000
damages because of a loss in pro-
perty value caused by the dredging
of a new channel at the mouth by
the Authority. They stated ,this
work had caused sand bars in. the
old river bed which made it -im-
possible for Ahern to reach their
cottages by water. -Exeter Times -

Seek Tax Reimbursement
At the public hearing of the On-
tario Water Resources Commis.'
sion here Friday relative to the
planned sewage system for the
town of Mitchell, Reeve J. Wilson
Brown, of Fullerton township, ask-
ed if compensation would be paid
for loss of taxation on property
the Commission having planned to
take Over some Fullerton land re-
quired for lagoons. Mr. Wilson
brought out that one school sec-
tion in the township would lose a
considerable amount in taxes, but
he had no estimate of the amount.
The reply to his question was that
at present there is no provincial
legislation establishing payment,
in lieu of taxes, for land used by
the OWRC. however, C. S. Mac -
Naughton, MLA (PC, Huron), who
acted as hearing chairman, said
be thought there might be some
future legislation amendments,•but
added that "frankly I am not too
sure." Buildings are assessable for
taxation.—Mitchell Advocate.
