MRS. ROLAND SQUIRE
Mrs. Roland Squire died Sunday
at Clinton. Formerly of Usborne
Township, she was in her 71st year.
The former Lena Rachel Blatch-
ford, she is survived by her hus-
band, Egmondville; a daughter,
Mrs. Garnet (Marie) Dalrymple,
Egmondville, and sons John, Lon-
don; Henry, Sebringville,

Funeral services for Thomas A.
Smith, well-known Guelph resi-
dent and manager of the Guelph
Branch of the Toronto-Dorninion
Bank, were held from McIntyre
and Wilkie Funeral Home, Guelph,
on June 11. Interment was in Wood -
lawn cemetery.
Mr. Smith, who was in his 57th
year, was born in Seaforth, the
son of the late John Arthur Smith
and the former Mary Dodds. He
was educated in Seaforth and be-
gan his banking career in the Dom-
inion Bank, Seaforth. •
Joining the bank in 1920, he was
a manager in 1933. Ten years ago
he was appointed manager of the
Guelph Branch of the bank, a posi-
tion he held until his death..
On August 4, 1931, he married.
the former Era M.. Madill in Lon-
don, Ont. Mrs. Smith survives her
husband. Other stirvivors are a
son, Gregory, Toronto; a daugh-
terf Elizabeth Ann, also of Toron-
to,. and three giandchildren, Gre-
gory, Peter and Jennifer.
JOHN R. MacKENZIE
John R. MacKenzie, of Tucker -
smith, passed away in the Thamer
Nursing Home in Seaforth on Mon-
day, at 4:30 p.m. after six months
Illness. In his 84th year, he was
born in Teeswater, and was mar-
ried in North Dakota to Mabel
Rum, of Leadbury, who deceased
him in 1944.
He is survived by six children:
Gordon, of McKillop; Mrs. (Lil-
lian) Robert Lang, of Swift Cur-
rent; Leslie, of Tuckersmith; Ken-
neth, of Saskatchewan; Ross, of
TillVonbtirg, and Mit. (Dorothy)
William Papple, of Egmondville.
He is also survived by five sisters
and two brothers: Mrs. George
Fleischutt, of Detroit; Mrs, Helen
Hund, of Royal Oak, Mich.; Mrs.
Dolena Moase, of Byron; Mr's. Aus-
tin North and Mrs. Pearl Lawson,
of London; Charlie, of Barkdale,
Sask., and Franzer, of Queen Char-
lotte, B.C.
Mr, McKenzie was a farmer all
his life . and was a member of
Duff's United Church, McKillop.
In .his early life he spent 19 years
in North Dakota and 25. years in
Saskatchewan, coming to Tucker -
smith in 1937.

nesday at -2 p.m., when the Rev.
J. C. Britton, of Northside United
Church, officiated at the funeral

cle of Carmel Presbyterian Chitral
Monday evening, Guests included
former members 'of the Arnold Clr-
cle, WMS and Evening Auxiliary,
Hensall United Church, St. Paul's
Anglican, Hensall, Chiselhurst Unit-
ed Church and Hayfield Presbyter-
ian Church. The program opened
by singing "0 God or Bethel, fol-
lowed by Call to Worship and wel-
come by Mrs. Beaton.
Mrs. Ruby Bell gave the worship
theme, "Lite's Highways," after
which Mrs. Harry Snell read the
Scripture. Miss Hannah Murray
• led in the devotional. Mrs. Lawr-
ence Baynham and Mrs. Pearl
Love sang a duet, "0 Master, Let
Me Walk With Thee." Mrs. Mal-
colm Dougall accompanied at the
organ console. The devotional clos-
ed with prayer by Mrs. Ruby Bell.
Mrs. A. Orr introduced the arest
speaker, Mrs. n. J. Lane, of Clin-
ton, who delivered an inspiring
message to the ladies to further
• the missionary work of the church,
congratulating the Arnold Circle
on their thirty years of service to
Missions. Mrs, John Baker thank-
ed Mrs. Lane for her message.
Miss Carol Brown favored with
organ selections. Silent prayers
were offered in memory of the late
Mrs. H. Arnold, who helped to or-
ganize the circle and to whom it
was named in honor: Miss Dorothy
Parker sang a Solo, "Others." Mrs.
Dougall was her accompanist.
Guests were welcomed by Mrs.
Ed. Fink, Mrs. George Vais and
Mrs, Beaton, Mrs, Archie MacGre-
gor was in charge of the register.
A reception followed in the schopl
room of the church, which was
beautifully decorated. The. anni-
versary cake was arrang,ed around
roses and candleabra. 'Mrs. Stew-
art Bell conducted the candle light-
ing eeremony, calling the past
presidents to light the candles.
Mrs. George Walker. lit' the first
candle in memory of her daugh-
ter, the late. Miss Alice Walker,
the first president.

GEORGE REID ,
VARNA—George Reid, of RR 1,
Varna, a successful farmer of
Stanley Township, passed away
suddenly on Monday evening at
Clinton Public Hospital. He .had
been admitted earlier that day by
Bonthron ambulance. He was in
his 64th year.
Mr. Reid returned home Friday
from Victoria Hospital, London,
where he had undergone surgery
for a brain tumor and was out for
a drive on Sunday. He took worse
on Monday and was admitted to
hospital.
Survivors are his widow, the for-
mer Isabel Parker; three sons,
Robert, Wallacebure Charles, of
Varna; Bill, Ottawa; one brother,
James Reid, Weston; three sisters,
Mabel, Mrs. Wyn Cable, Windsor;
Margaret, Mrs. Paul Jashin, and
Mrs. Verna Greenbury, both. of
Flint, Mich.
A veteran of the First World
War, Mr. Reid was a member of
the Royal Orange Lodge 1035, Var-
na. A member of Varna United
Church, he was an elder of that
church. He was also secretary of
Stanley Township Federation of
Agriculture and on the board of
Clinton District Collegiate Insti-
tute.

are being held from Varna United
Church Thursday at 2 p.m. Rev.
T. J. Pitt Is to officiate, with burial
in Hayfield cemetery.
Plan Convention
In Toronto
Mr. Harold McNally, presiding
minister of Jehovah's Witnesses,
will head a local delegation to at-
tend a four-day convention to .be
held,June 30th to July 3rd at Ex.,-
hibition Park, Toronto. The con-
vention is arranged by the Watch-
tower Bible and Tract Society. for
Jehovah's Witnesses. An attend-
ance of 25,000 is anticipated.

Wed 40 Years
Open house was held by Mr. and
Mrs. Harvey Moore recently on
the occasion of their 40th wedding
annivetsary. A large number of
relatives, neighbors and friends
called on the couple.
A family dinner was held Satur-
day night with 19 present. The
couple received many lovely gifts.

Valerie Brier, 11/2 -year-old grand-
daughter of Mrs. Mae McLellan, is
recovering from a fractured leg
she received when she was acci-
dentally hit by a car. She was re-
leased from South Huron Hospital,
Exeter, last Thursday. Her par-
ents are Mr. and Mrs. Dick Brier,
London.
J. R. (Scotty) Hume, recreation-
al director, has been appointed as
a director to the board for the
Lake Huron Recreational Council
on the playground summer school,
to be held .June 26 - 30 at Goderich.

Brantford General Hospital, spent
the weekend with her parents, Mr.

Murney Twitchell graduated as
a barber in Toronto last week with
highest honors, and has accepted
a position in Kitchener.

ball game at Mitchell Monday
night. Pitchers for Hensall were
Bill Shaddick and Steve Kyle, and
catcher, Dennis Mock.
Leonard Noakes, who has spent
the past four Weeks helping to pre-
pare the Mid -State of Canada plant
at Calgary for operation, arrived
home Tuesday Morning. He flew
from Calgary and said the scenery
along the way was beautiful,

On Friday, June 17, fifty students
and three teachers from'SS 1, 7
and 10, Stanley Township, jtook a
bus tour to Niagara Falls, Ont.
Tfie tour included a stop at the
Welland Canal, Brock's Monument
at Queenston, where they ,had
lunch. They then went on to ,the
Sir Adam Beck -Generating Station
No. 2. After this they visited Fort
George and then went on to see
the Falls. They dined at the cafe-
teria there, and had a pleasant
day.
Neil Picnic
The Neil picnic Was held Sunday
at Riverview Park, Exeter, open-
'ing with a peanut scramble. Races
were as follows: five years and
under, Tommy Roberts; under 8
years, Jimmie Roberts, Cathy Rob-
erts; 12 years and under, Marion
Roberts, Jimmie Roberts, Cathy
Roberts; young people's race, Clay-
ton King, Ron Wilson; young lad-
ies, Helen Cole; three-legged race,
Helen Cole and Marion Roberts;
Jimmie and Cathy Roberts. The
curiosity contest was a tie; guess-
ing the number of corn in a jar,
Mrs. Harry Cole; mystery contest,
Clayton Koog; sampling contest,
B-ev Turner.
After a sumptuous supper a busi-
ness meeting followed with Harry
Cole as president and Bev Turner
as secretary -treasurer. It ,was de-
cided to hold the next reunion the
same date next year al Riverview
Park.
