From the massive bill-
board on North Line in Wal-
ton, Ont., you can tell this is
one of the many signs to
come -pun intended. From
what several people are say-
ing, the 100th International
Plowing Match & Expo is only
"16 -short months away."
May 7 marked one of the
first events leading up to the
2017 IPM, which is expected
to hail to more than 100,000
agricultural fanatics. Vehi-
cles were lined up on both
sides of the road. Municipal
politicians, House Of Parlia-
ment members and several
locals all joined together. To
suit the moment -a few even
sat on some hay bundles.
Formal speeches were made
by the people responsible for
making this project a reality.
Conservative MP, Ben Lobb
for the Ontario riding of
Huron -Bruce made a couple
jokes to make the crowd
laugh and Huron East Mayor,
MP of Huron -Bruce, Ben Lobb speaks to a crowd of more than
a hundred before the sign unveiling for the 100th International
Plowing Match & Expo.
Bernie MacLellan followed
with a more serious way of
conversation directed to the
large crowd.
"For a number of years,
we've always bragged about
the fact that Huron County's
agricultural industry is actu-
ally larger then the four
Atlantic provinces receipts
put together," stated
MacLellan.
"Now that's quite an

accomplishment, we are also
the largest agricultural pro-
ducing area in Ontario. So if
there is ever a spot to have
the 100th International Plow-
ing Match, it makes sense to
have it in the largest agricul-
tural area that there is."
Sheltered from the light
drizzle of rain in a huge white
tent, behind the crowd was
what seemed to be a large
sign. Not much could be
viewed since it was covered
by a blue tarp. Beneath the
covering many wondered just
what it looked like. After the
entire dignitary had their
chance to say what they
wanted, everyone headed
towards the enclosed sign. It
was time to show the public.
"This is the official unveil-
ing of the sign, so that every
time somebody drives by

to the 2017 IPM," said the
chair of the 2017 IPM, Jacqui
Bishop just after helping with
the revealing of the large sign.

the weather turned onus. So
we thought why not do it in
the spring. The grass is green
and things are actually grow-
ing." Bishop said.
Dressed in a plowing
designer sweater, the MPP for
Huron -Bruce, Lisa Thomp-
son was also one of the peo-
ple chosen for the inaugura-
tion of the signage, she told
the Expositor that many do
not know, but she is rather
familiar with similar events in
the agriculture sector. Back
when she went to university,
Thompson was employed in
three plowing matches.
"I have an extra interest of
how it comes together
because I know how the
back -end works," she said.
The competition is set to
take place in Walton, Ont.
