I think the UFC is safer than people think
The Ultimate Fighting
Championship, also buzz-
ing around the world in
short form as the UFC is in my
opinion, the most exhilarating
sport in the world.
There is nothing like two men,
or since 2012 when they signed
superstar Ronda Rousey for the
first female, two women duking
it out in an all-out warfare of
tactical hand-to-hand combat.
It's like Christmas to me every
time there is an up and coming
match -up on pay-per-view. So
when uneducated opinions state
that the fighting phenomena is
not safe or they call it barbaric,it
really grinds my gears. If the
UFC is hazardous, why haven't
any of their athletes died in the
octagon? (This is the cage they
fight in; it's in the shape of an
octagon.)
If you watch a standard NHL
hockey game, a fan -favoured
norm is to see players dropping
their gloves, which means they
fight mono a mono in a bare -
knuckles ice brawl. (And just to
let you know hockey is my sec-
ond favourite sport). They also
fight on a hard surface and if the
winner of the free-for-all deliv-
ers a knockout to the other per-
son from a flurry of punches or
one lucky shot, the end result is
not going to be pretty. With a
mixed martial arts (MMA) style
of engagement, each athlete
must wear a mouth guard and
padded gloves. The UFC is con-
sidered MMA because each
fighter combines wrestling,
karate, jiu jitsu, judo, boxing,
kick -boxing to name a few to

form a person that is pretty
much a Frankenstein of a
human being.
I'm not trying to compare
hockey to MMA -but my state-
ments are legitimate enough to
weigh out and compare in terms
of fighting safety. If you click on
HBO and watch a boxing match,
yes, their gloves are a lot larger
than the UFC's, but there is a
huge difference if we're sitting
the two sports next to each other
and debating on who's barbaric
and who's not.
First off, in the UFC if at any
point of the fight you are not
defending yourself the bout is
over, you get a TKO (technically
knocked out) -the referee calls it.
In boxing you can damn near be
knocked out 10 times and as
long as you get up in the ten
count, the fight resumes.
Please people before you
judge the UFC fight -game, eval-
uate other sports before you do
or give it a watch and I will guar-
antee you just might like it. The
men and women are freaks of
fitness. In my eyes they are the
most in -shape specimens
Debt Grows in Ontario
Press -release
from MPP of
Huron -Bruce
Lisa Thompson
QUEEN'S PARK - Under a
reign of Liberal spending and
mismanagement, Ontario's debt
is set to increase by more than
$50 billion in the next four years,
and this spells bad news for rural
Ontario, says MPP for Huron -
Bruce Lisa Thompson.
In a report published on July
19th, Ontario's Financial Account-
ability Office (FAO) determined
that Ontario's debt is expected to
rise to $350 billion by 2020-21.
Currently, Ontario's debt burden is
one of the highest among provin-
cial governments, clocking in at
$296.1 billion as of March 31, 2016.
The FAO went on to report that
while he believes the Liberals
will artificially balance the
budget in time for the next elec-
tion through the one-time sell -
offs of Hydro One and prime
LCBO real estate in Toronto, the
manner in which the Premier is
known to mankind. Their work-
out regimen is impeccable and
besides NFL players, I don't
think any other teams or players
train quite like they do. Along
with all the specific martial arts
training that I've listed at the
start of my column, they lift
weights, run track and field
(long and short distances), some
do gymnastics, there is even a
new thing where they have
movement coaches and to top it
off they swim too. With saying
that, this is no 60-70 minute
daily workout that most of the
planet is accustomed to; we're
talking five to six hours a day of
demanding heart -palpitating fit-
ness regimes. I know I've told
you all the good things about the
UFC, but with every competitive
rivalry that uses blood and
sweat, there are always some
cons to go with them.
First off there is cutting weight.
Most fighters cut weight to make
a certain classes of pounds. If
somebody steps on the scale
every morning at 170 pounds,
they are most likely going to fight
at 155 or even smaller, 145 lb. To
shed off the 25-35 pounds they
drink massive amounts of water
for days and keep a stern diet,
then on the last day they dehy-
drate themselves by drinking no
water. Some individuals can lose
up to 30 pounds in a week or two.
Upon weigh -ins in a professional
bout, fighters are granted a
24-hour time frame to replenish
and hydrate before the fight. To
lose that amount of weight in that
short of time can- not be good for
the body. That is the thing that
conducting the province's busi-
ness is unfortunately setting
Ontario up to fall back into a def-
icit after 2018. Ontarians must
call the Premier out for her poor
fiscal management.
"Rural Ontario is already feel-
ing the effects of increasing hydro
rates and cuts to much needed
front-line healthcare," said
Thompson. "It's time the Premier
and her government stopped put-
ting their own priorities ahead of
the realities and needs Ontarians
face every day. After they have
sold off everything they can,
kind of bothers me about fight-
ers, why not just walk around and
fight what you weigh in every-
day? I guess they want to win,
which makes sense I guess. On
the other hand boxers do the
exact same thing.
As well as the weight cutting
aspect of the sport, the part
that bothers me most is how
much these people are paid. As
I mentioned before these jocks
train around the clock, often
from sun up to sun down. It's
rather comical because the
organization as a whole is now
worth billions. Not bad as they
originally purchased the UFC
for $2 million dollars over a
decade ago; not a bad profit.
Anyways, as I've described, on
the money end, the sport is
worth a bunch, and still the
bottom fighters are making
next to nothing. The top fight-
ers are racking in the range of
$100,000-$500,000. By bottom,
I mean some walk away with a
$10,000 cheque, which means
after they pay their trainers,
they probably have enough for
a happy meal. Recently, the
UFC has been sold to private
investors for an approximately
jaw -dropping $4 billion. Hope-
fully the new owners will pay
these amazing fighters a little
more than a couple grand.
Signing out from my kitchen in
Harpurhey at 7 a.m. on a Sun-
day morning because my son is
a handful, Shaun AKA the guy
who loves to watch a good old
fashion one-on-one brawl, so
please next time you hear of
the UFC on TV, give it a whirl.
Premier Wynne won't have any
choice but to raise taxes to main-
tain her government's bad spend-
ing habits. No one can afford the
Liberal path that we're on."
She added, "The Premier has
frequently lectured on what kind
of world we should be leaving for
our children and grandchildren.
Her government's reckless spend-
ing and mismanagement however,
does not promise a better Ontario
for future generations. Will good
things continue to grow in
Ontario? Under the Wynne gov-
ernment, the answer is sadly no."
