Shaun Gregory The show house about to be placed on the foundation December 2 in Seaforth at Alexander Drive and Centennial Drive. Fisher says JL Retirement Living will boost economy during unveiling of show house Shaun Gregory Huron Expositor Transporting a house to its foundation, the crane swung; directly across the road from the local hospital, this stamped the first of many projects by JL Retire- ment Living. While one may look at this as the intertwining things to come, from a project that's believed to be $21 million, Seaforth Coun. Bob Fisher sees this as an enormous bonus for the economy. Bundled up in the cold with free Tim Hortons' cof- fee to keep warm, the com- munity had the chance to watch the retirement living project unfold first hand. "This is something that I've preached for years, we get these condos and people need help in the condos, we get the jobs in the retirement facility, that grows," explained Fisher after the 1,100 square foot two-bed- room show house was assembled. Service provides service, said Fisher. "Not a car plant, not a manufacturer" According to one of the two town councillors, Huron County has the third oldest population on average in Canada and with the demo- graphics of Seaforth, this plan makes sense for the community. "People come and work here and they want to live here," he said. A few feet away from the show house, President and CEO Jessica Lunshof watched the metamorphosis step-by-step smiling atop a dirt hill, the actuality was finally settling in on Alexan- der Drive and Centennial Drive. "This is just the start, it's just beginning," stated Lun- shof December 2. "This is just another piece to create positive energy and celebra- tion of what we are creating:' When the house has sur- passed its marketing obliga- tion, it will then be trans- ported down the street to the first of 10 four-plexes, adja- cent to the three-story retire- ment facility specially designed for dementia, hos- pice and palliative care. The next step is the launch of sales with the hopes of potentially "ground -break- ing" in the spring. Klass Jorritsma, Vice Pres- ident of Operations at Royal Homes Ltd. broke down the whole process of moving a house that he says weighs approximately 30-35 pounds per square foot. "It's pretty simple stuff," he said. The semi-detached house is transferred from the plant in Wingham onto the truck's flat bed, which they build themselves; this process makes it easier to construct in extreme temperatures. "We build indoors, just sim- ply because everything is handy, everything is exactly where you want it, it makes a better product." The house is then picked up off the trailer by the crane after being precisely positioned by the truck, where the other experi- enced construction employ- ees direct it to land on the foundation. Joking before the project launched last Friday, Lun- shof said it's never called the house dropping, which some people call it; for superstitious reasons, they term the transition as a "house setting." "Royal Homes does not like it when I say that word," she said, still giggling. For further information and what's next, go to www. jlretirementliving.com.
