put the horse. and rig in the driving
• shed of the Lucknow *Hotel, and -went
into the house. Coming out of the
hotel a few minutes later, he"discovered.
-the clothes had beeti taken out .Of -the
buggy. He started back to the , hotel
to look. for them but the missing par-
cel
could not be found and he informed
the Village constable of his loss. .A.
short time afterwards the you/14 man
returned - to the drive shed to get the
rig,7.-but was horror stricken to find
• the horse -and buggy,' which belonged
.to his employer, alsogone and search
as `they' may, no horse, buggy or
crahes could be found that night.
The only . clew, however, to the*stolen
property that could be discovered was
the finding of the paper that had been
- •
.wrapped about the clothes, 9n the hill
_near -Mr. Alex. ROSS' zesidente: It
appear g that.the thief after taking the
'clothes from the rig; carried the
bundle to the hill, where. the contents
of the parcel .was examined and the
paper and string_ left lying on the
-road. He, then ..returned to -the
drive --shed -and secured the horsand
=buggy, and iu order to- get out of the
village unobserved drove. the !animal
up -the steep hill on Victoria street -to
where he had loft .the clothes, and con-
tinued along the back ,,streets _ -to
Hamilton street, and .came out to the
gravel road at the tannery. It was a
well laid- plan, and the thief Whoever
he. -Was; is certainly well acquainted
with the lay out of the village. es-
-pite the. efforts of the village const le
and several. -others to find the stolen.

them was obtained till Sunday evening
when the horse, havng every ,appear-
ance of being tired And - hungry, was
found walking down the gravel road
-near the. second concession of .Kinloss,
coming towards. the Village. I There
was no driver in. -the buggy, :but the
poor aniinal's head. had been _Checked
up Very ligh, the lines securely. tied
-to the dash board, and the robe folded
and placid under the seat!, Who
.the guilty party wsa is a mystery,, but
it is certginly.the most bold and daring
piece of thieving fairer accomplished. in
.this place.: It does seem strange that
a thief could COMO into the vil)age on-
e, Saturday evening, With probe* two
or three hundredpeopleon the4treets,
and in. the full glare of theeleetric
_lights from the streets and shop
windows, take a large parcel of eloth-
ing, _and carry it away a couple of
hundred :yards,: and then while the.
owner of the goods the village

busy looking fpr it, the thief. comes
hack to - the hotel sheds steals the
horse and buggy, and gets out of the
village.vvith the whole. outfit. It may
simnel-. like fiction but it is neverthe-
less true,' and -up to. the present time
no further tzace can be had of the
thief. .•

THANKS OFFERING a 1U' EETIATO.
The W. F. M. S. Of the Wingham
Presbyterian- church held a 'very sae-
cessful thanks. offering meeting on Wed-
,
nesday, Nov. 1st. The meeting was
presided over by the President, Mrs.
Hutton, being assisted in the de,votion-
al exercises by Mrs- -Dickson; Mrs.
Wightman, and Mrs. McNabb, of LA -
know. Mrs. Carr and Mrs McDonald
opened. the envelopes ;Ind counted the
offerings, the Secretary reading the
texts of Scripture that accompanied
them. The thanks of the auxiliary are
tendered Mrs. McNabb, the Presby-.
terean Secretary who so kindly attend-
ed the meetingand prepared and read
such a very interesting 'paper 9n the
subject "Iyonien gleaning in thy:, field,"
showing manrdifferent_ways in which
she can work for the Master, and giv-
ing a .number. of instances of weraeu's
work in ministering to those in need,
also the different spheres in which she
can accomplish so mueh, especially in
mission work; when she sets this be-
fore her as the standard of excellence
at which she aims, and will not rest
until sin is vanished and the world
is Won for Christ. The Secretary,.
Miss Emily Mclean, gave a reading
on, "Practical work in Missionary &P-
ieties" which contained a number of..
good suggestions to_members, Mrs. J
Ritchie, of the Con,gregational church
being present gave a short address con-
gratulating, the Society on the suteess
of their meeting, and wishing them
continued prosperity. The offering
amounted to $42. At the close of the
