An Important Decision
Mr. Justice Fergusoft has rendered
a decision which is of somninterest to
county councils. It was upon the
question of how the width Of a stream
was to be determined, and His Lord-
ship ruled that this must be done by
measuring the, actual width of the
channel that • the stream had cut for
itself from bank to bank, and not the
width of the water at any particular
stage. This decision will relieve many
townships of the cost of maintaining
bridges which will have to be main-
tained by the county councils.

His many , friends will regret to
learn that Mr. Donaldrlark, of Huron
township, one of the mosb extensive
importers and breeders of heavy
draught horses in this section, has
been forced to make an assignment
for the benefit of his creditors. Mr.
Clark was -hard-working, industrious
man, and was generally looked upon
as well-to-do, but he has met with
several serious losses of colts and
horses by death during the past'
couple of years, which no doubt were
the—chief—ateasec of—hi—is
troubles.
School Vacations
Certain changes have been made -in •
the regulations of the school holidays
we believe, Which add a week to the
total vacations. School will close on
Jane 30th and open on the last Mon-
day in. August, in towns and incorpor-
ated villages, and in the country they
open one week earlier. - All schools
open on Jan. 3rd after Christmas holi-
days, and the week following Good
Friday will be a vacation, instead of
school comMencing after Easter -Mon-
day as formerly.
County Council
The County Council of Bruce will
open their June session in Lucknow
oii Tuesday evening next; and all the
arrangements for their entertainment
by our citizens are completed. The
programme will include a banquet and
reception in .the Town Hall on Tues-
day evening, and drive to Goderich to
meet the 'members •of the Huron
County Council on Thursday. The
banquet on Tuesday night will be
the most brilliant affair ever given in
the village, and it is desirous that all
our citizens, who have so generously
assisted in providing for' it, will be
present to welcome the visitors.
Besides the meeting of the County
Council it is expected that a number of
the leading citizens of Walkerton,
Kincardine and- other paces will be
here. This is the , first time the
County Council has ever assembled in
Lucknow and from the hearty manner
in which the people have responded
we are sure the visitors Will go away
thoroughly pleased with their treat-
ment in, Lucknow.
Workmen Anniversary
The members of the Ancient Order
of United Workmen of this village

Morning last. This , society has a
membership of about sixty, which
incudes . not only' many of "the
prominent business men of the village,
ealt. many leading farmers froni the
surrounding townships, ' and their
turnout on Sunday was a credit to the
Order. The Rev. Mr. Connors, pastor
of the church took for hi text the
17th verse of,the second chapter of first
Peter, "Honor alt men. Love the
brotherhood. Fear God. • Honor the
king," from. which he preached a very
appropriate and practical discourse.
In opening his remarks the reV. gentle-
man extended a hearty welcome to the
Workmen. He had read the consti-
tution of the Order and there found
fatherhood of God, and universal
brotherhood of mice. and he therefore
had a right CO call Chem brothers,
On completion of the services th-e
procession re-formed and marched
back to the lodge room, where a short
session was held.
