The storm rages and so does the
debate. Though a rough evening the
hall war* fairly well filled. Owing to
u ns crafters.
The Dominion elections on Thum
day resulted in a great victory for the
Reform party and unrestricted reci-
procity. So far as the returns have
been received, the probabilities are
that the Government will be sustained
but.by a greatly reduced majority.
Three of the Ministry, the Hon.
John Carling, of London ; Sir. A. P.
Caron, M inisier of, Militia, and the
Hon. E, Foster, the Minister' of
Finance, have all been defeated by
large majorities.
The three ridings of Bruce and the
three- ridings of Huron go solid for
the Reformers.,
West Huron — M: C. Cameron,
elected -by -over 300 -majority;
East Huron—Dr: McDonald elected
by nearly HO; majority.
South Huron John McMillan
elected by a large majority:
West Bruce—James Rowand, major-
ity sa fir as heard from, 559,
estBrine--4Z,—T-ruait—eleet-ell--by-a-
majority of 125. -
North Bruce—Dr. Bonnar, as far
as heard from, over 200 majority.
Sir John A. McDonald was returned
for Kingston by over 400 majority.
The two Hamilton seats and the three
ridings in Toronto were also carried by
the Conservatives.

Majority for Government ...... 19
The contest in the village passed off
very quietly and the best of good
humor prevailed all day, and when the
ballots were counted Mr. Morrison
had a majority of 6 over Mr. Rowand.,
In the evening the large Town Hall
was packed to the.,doors with Reform-
ers from the village and surrounding
townships, all anxious to 'hear the
returns as they were sent in by tele-
graph, and - w hent' the news of the
great victory of Mr. M: C. Cameron,
the old war-horse 'of West'flu►'on, was
announced, cheer after cheer rent the
air. 'During -the„evening • several
songs, recitations, and music were
given and which were greatly appre-
ciated by the vast' crowds!, present.
The large store of Mr, C. Stewart was
secured by the Conservatives and a
large fathering was also present, and -
a good deal of enthusiasm prevailed as
the d,ijtferent returns were announced.
Both meetings•brokc up shortly after
12 o'clock, and we are pleased to say'
verything passed off withouA an dis-

Harper ; Glee, Messrs. and Miss Mc-
Kenzie; Song, Mr. .McKinnon ; Song,
Messrs. Ed. and W. Pierce. For the
debate Messrs. Johnston, McPherson
and Hodgins were chosen 'as jury.
Torr-suhjtct "Resolved that the world
has, suffered more from the evils of
war than from those -of intemperance"
was sustained by:J. McLeod, G. Pur-
vis, J. Marshall and A. D. McKenzie,
opposed by J. Valens, J. Purvis and
,J .McKenzie.. Though° both sides did
exceedingly well the decision was in
favor of the affirmative. This season
has -been a specially successful one for
the society. It has, as one of the pre -
dieters puts it, • attained -'his. ideal --.of
what it should be—largely operated by
the . you -ng man. A glance at the
history?uf the society might not here
be out of plage. It was originated,
not at first in connection, but parallel
with the Mechanics'- Institute .Library.
If any one man caa he said to have

teacher, deserves that credit, but he
was ably seconded by W. Valens Pi
Corrigan,J. H. Ackert, A. Shoebottom,
J. Purvis and J. Nicholls. There are
others also who lent every assistance.
The meetings were at 'first held in the
school house. All the members spoke
each evening, five. Minutes • being
allowed: each, and with one or two
exceptions this tiniemws,s found to be
sufficient. A better ureansof marking
the advance could not be taken, than
by comparing the speeches then made
with some of -the present.` 'Clear, cut-
ting, fairly developed, evolutionary
arguments ale not now the exce true.
Except inicon ieetiorew.ith the Yakut
-could never hove been attained.'
A great many peopl? say, "What is
the use of it all, young farmers will
never need it 1" We answer, they do
need it, and every day He who can,
by careful criticin,n, select -tile sound
and logical statements • from those
merely trumped up fur the 'occasion;
will, naturally, not stop there, but will
u.;e the shrewdness thus engendered in
his nature in his every day • life, and
will apply it ,practically to, business.
Youth is the time for young ►nen to
would their minds and sharpen their,
intellelts,: and this rata be done only
by covin. in contact with the people
of the world." We have. already ,over
run o'ur•space, btrt this article would
be incornpiete without mentio.aing our,
worthy president, Mr, Corrigan.. Since•
the inception of this society he. has
• held -the position of president, and no
doubt a great deal of the unanimity
that has enurac-eriz+d it.--can---be at-
tribut( d to his genial influence... The
debate'- for next evening is " R solved
