The Huron Public Library Clinton Branch recently hosted a book
sale with tables stuffed full of used and donated books. All
proceeds went back to the library to purchase new equipment
and host events.
Enrolment is up in Avon Maitland elementary schools

The Avon Maitland District
School Board did not expect the
enrolment numbers that came
back to them at their board
meeting on September 13. They
have 170 more students
enrolled than they had
projected.
During the first week of
school, the board asks princi-
pals to count how many stu-
dents they have at their school.
In kindergarten this year,
they are around 60 students
over their 2016-2017 estimate.
However Cheri Carter, the
Associate Superintendent of
Financial Services and Treas-
urer at the School Board, said
this is not unusual since Kin-
dergarten is the most common

grade for last minute enrol-
ment, so it's normal to be off
projections.
However it's the 110 other
students that are unusual
because these students are
largely in grades 5-8. It's
important to note too that they
are from out of district; these
numbers represent newcomers
coming in, not kids switching
schools within the district.
There are no clear conclu-
sions yet on why this has

happened.
"The big question is why,"
said Carter. "You can draw
conclusions, but at this point
it's too early to say this is why
they came here."

moving around in the first few
weeks of school, a final count
will be done on October 31.
In the next few months,
they will be investigating why
this has happened.
Though they are unsure of
the cause at this point, Carter
said, "we really hope this
trend continues. We are a
declining board; we have
been around 12 years:'
Though numbers have
been declining each year,
their long-term estimates pre-
dict that they should eventu-
ally stabilize.
This year's numbers maybe
a part of that projection, since
it's not that numbers are 170
students over what they had
last year; they are 170 students
over their projections, and
they had projected a decline
in students, not an increase.
There could be several rea-
sons for the decline over the
last couple decades, one
being that people are having
less children.
A lot of work goes into the
projections, which come from
each individual school. Prin-
cipals look at their enrolment,
students who are registering
and who are leaving, and
make the projections based
off that.
