Londesborough Huron Christian School to undergo major renovations
News
Brenda Radford
Special to the News Record
Last Sunday I ventured
under the bridge that is
being repaired south of the
village to see for myself just
what is happening.
Juergen Schmitz had been
similarly curious and had
remarked that the bridge
was in quite bad condition.
My observations confirmed
this statement. Much repair
work has already been done
to the concrete but many
cracks are still obvious in the
pillars and arches. Huge iron
I -beams and supports are
being installed and new con-
crete water courses.
This particular bridge was
installed in the 1940s. No
one at that time could have
foreseen the amount of traf-
fic or the weight of the trucks
that would cross that bridge
on a daily basis now. The fol-
lowing is a story I've learned
about that construction.
Harold Adams lived in the
village but owned the farm
just south of the river on the
east side of the highway.
[Ralph Buffinga owns that
farm now having purchased
it from Harold's daughter,
Jean Jardine.]
Harold and his team of
horses worked for the bridge
builders, Gibson and Mul-
berry. He and his team were
the last traffic across the for-
mer bridge before its demo-
lition. Vehicle traffic was
rerouted a mile and a quar-
ter for the next two years. A
swinging hammock was
installed for foot traffic. In
1942, Harold and his team
were the first to cross the
new bridge.
Long-time residents may
remember the bridge having
had a variety of repairs in the
intervening years, but the
current one seems to be the
most extensive. Can you
imagine rerouting today's
traffic?

Students and staff at Hul-
lett Central invite the com-
munity to a 50th Anniversary
Celebration on Thursday,
September 22nd. There will
be a BBQ beginning at 5:00
p.m., time to tour the rooms
and an official ceremony
at 6:45. There will be an out-
door showing of the movie,
"Finding Dory at 7:30. Pro-
ceeds from the movie will
be part of the Grade 8
fundraising.
On another note, we took
in the movie "Sully" recently
and would recommend it to
you. It is rated PG and our 13
year old granddaughter
quite enjoyed it as well. How
could one go wrong with
Tom Hanks as the pilot who
brought about the `Miracle
on the Hudson" in January,
2009 and Clint Eastwood as
the director? Can you believe
Clint is 86?
I received a good news
story last week that has a
connection to the Londes-
borough community.
On September 20th, Dr.
Brenda Andrews received a
Companion of the Order of
Canada. Dr. Andrews is the
daughter of Bill and Lois
Andrews of Toronto and
granddaughter of the late
Edwin and Hattie Woods.
Brenda's brother, Greg, oper-
ates the farm formerly
owned by Edwin and Hattie
just down the 13th north of
Londesborough.
Dr. Andrews is Professor
and Chair of the Banting &
Best Department of Medical
Research within the faculty
of Medicine at the University
of Toronto. She is also the
Director of the Terrence
Donnelly Centre for Cellular
and Biomolecular Research.
This centre is a new interdis-
ciplinary research institute
with the mandate to create a
research environment that
encourages the integration
of biology, computer sci-
ence, engineering and
chemistry. It is intended to
span leading areas of bio-
medical research. She is an
internationally recognized
expert in medical genetics
and gives talks around the
globe.

Huron Christian School,
School,
located at 87 Percival Street,
in Clinton, is about to
undergo a major renovation
project to its facility.
The project will affect
many areas but most signifi-
cantly in the primary class-
rooms of the school. The
entrance, foyer and adminis-
trative office will also be ren-
ovated, the stage in the gym
will be repositioned, a per-
forming arts space will be
added, and a newly designed
pitched roof will cover the
entire facility.
Designed by Henry Swin-
kels Architect, the new
design drawings for the
existing building will boast
12,500 square feet of reno-
vated space and 3,660
square feet of new construc-
tion, increasing the current
square footage of 19,575
square feet up to 23,235
square feet. grace of God,
"By the God,
Huron Christian School has
been offering a Christ -cen-
tred education in these facil-
ities for 54 years. We have
benefited from the vision
and work of the generations
before us. And now we want
to ensure future generations
also enjoy their legacy.
We all know that life
changes at an incredible
pace so we need to ensure
our programs and educa-
tional environment continue
to be relevant and current.
To this end, improvements
to our building are necessary
to not only support our cur-
rent programs, but to expand
our educational opportuni-
ties, as well as create new
spaces for learning. These
enhancements will allow us
to continue to provide a
quality Christ -centred
education which is so vitally
which is so vitally
important to us" says Nick
Geleynse, Principal.
"A lot of thought and plan-
ning has been done over the
last two years in preparation
for this project and now is
the time to shift our ideas
from paper to actual bricks
and mortar. These are excit-
ing times at HCS - a time for
us to lay the groundwork for
Christian education in
Huron County for many
years to come. It's time to
make history once again!"
The Huron Christian
School Board of Directors
has approved moving for-
ward with the $3M Same
Foundation, Next Genera-
tion Capital Campaign that
will raise the necessary
funds for this large project.
The decision came following
the undertaking of a Com-
munity Assessment that was
conducted by The Dennisconducted Dennis
Group Inc., a fundraising
consulting firm, in the spring
of this year, and the comple-
tion of concept designs by
Henry Swinkels Architect in
June 2016.
The Pre Campaign Team
has been meeting through
the summer months to pre-
pare for the campaign,
including the recruitment of
a Campaign Cabinet who
will move the campaign for-
ward under the guidance of
The Dennis Group Inc.
Members of the commu-
nity were invited to a BBQ at
Huron Christian School on
Friday, September 16 to help
celebrate and launch the
Same Foundation, Next
Generation $3M Capital
Campaign and see the latest
plans for the renovation
project.
