"I remember my first shift, because up until then the idea had just been in theory," said Cameron. "The first per- son to come in was a single mother with four kids." This really moved Cameron. Since then, they have moved several times, and for the last couple years have been located at 9 Rattenbury Street in the same yellow building as Room2Grow. Today, they get most of their food from the Huron County Food Bank Distribu- tion Center. The centre col- lects food mostly from wholesalers and distributes it to various food banks in Huron County. However Friends of the Community also gets food from people in the commu- nity including from garden- ers who have extra vegeta- bles in their gardens, farmers who have butchered meat to donate, people who have food left in their campers at the end of the summer and more. They take produce, meat, canned goods, dairy products and more. Unlike most food banks in the county, at the Friends of the Community, no proof of income is required to get food. Individuals are also allowed to come in once a week. Cameron said their demographics vary widely, drawing from every age group. She estimates that they have around 70-100 visits a month from community members, some who come each week and some who come once a month. She noted that this is higher than when they started ten years ago, likely due to the fact that the economy has not gotten any better than when the food bank started. Every person who works at the food bank is a volunteer; there is no paid staff. Cam- eron estimates there are around ten volunteers who regularly help out. They serve all of Huron County. While many of their guests are from Clinton, they also draw from other places in the county. The food bank's hours of operation are Wednesday from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m., Thurs- day from 3 p.m. - 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 p.m. - 12 p.m. Anyone who has ques- tions or is interested in donating can call Betty at 519-955-1809.
