This year, Blyth was an easy choice for the Flyers. There are currently seven players with them that are alumni of the Blyth -Brussels minor hockey organization. Assistant captain Brody Ten - pas, goalie Nathan Watson, Wyatt Carey, Jordan Hubbard, Logan Kellington, Mitchell Kellington and Hayden Ten - pas all honed their skills in that system. In addition, Blyth residents Steve Howson and Brent Scrimgeour are mem- bers of the Flyers executive. The Flyers General Man- ager Dan Kerr says the Flyers are grateful for the support they get from the local minor hockey systems and taking games back into their arenas is a good way to thank the par- ents and volunteers and to encourage current minor hockey players to tryout with the Flyers in years to come. The Provincial Junior Hockey League game the Fly- ers played Saturday night at the Blyth Arena, before a good-sized crowd, provided a good example of the speed and competitiveness provided by that league and those qual- ities were made even more obvious by the smaller ice sur- face of that arena The Mitchell Hawks were pressed to the limit by the Flyers in that game but still managed to emerge with a 4-3 victory. The Hawks were up 2-0 in the second period on the strength of goals by Derek Elliott and Maverick Petrie. But Tyler McCracken and Brodie Tenpas put the Flyers on even terms with the Hawks scoring goals that were assisted by Jack Francis 33 Main St., Seaforth 519.600.1577 Direct 519.272.5413 THE SIGN THAT SAYS SOLD and Mitchell Kellington. Garrett James put the Hawks back on top scoring a power- play goal in the last minute of the second period. In the third period, the Flyers' Mitchell Kellington scored a shorthanded goal at the 14:11 mark on a play with Ryan Stulp to again tie the score, this time at 3-3. But shortly after the Flyers' penalty expired Drew Gross scored what proved to be the winning goal for Mitchell. The Flyers Assistant Coach Doug Cruickshank said the game plan was to use a neu- tral zone trap on the smaller ice to slow the Hawks down. That idea seemed to have some success. The other part of the game plan was to stay out of the penalty box. That part didn't quite happen. The Flyers handed the Hawks eight powerplay opportunities and Mitchell scored on two of them. The Flyers had only two power- play opportunities and did not score on either of them. Nate Watson was again a standout in the Goderich goal, stopping 29 of the Hawks' 33shots. Cruick- shank commented: "When we play five -on -five, we are proving we can play with any team in the league. We just need to play more five -on -five." The reference was to the excess number of penalties assessed to the Flyers which involves the matter of team discipline to some extent, but also there were a few penalty calls on which the Flyers perhaps deserved a better break. Be that as it may, the game itself was fast paced with lots of hitting and it provided lots of excitement for the enthu- siastic crowd. Two Flyers, Brody Tenpas and Noah Kuno, were forced to leave the game with injuries of undetermined severity. The Flyers play at home this week, Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the MRC, versus the Kincar- dine Bulldogs. It was their first loss of the young season as their record now stands at three wins and one shootout loss for a total of seven points in the standings. The Radars started quickly as they scored two goals in the first seven minutes. Defenseman Randy Kilburn gave Clinton a 1-0 lead at 4:26 as his slap shot found an open corner with Luke Vick getting the helper. At 7:30 while on the power play, hardworking Kurtis Bartliff increased the Radar's lead to 2-0 as Luke Vick and Ryan Murphy moved the puck around the perimeter nicely before Bar- tliff was able to slam it home. The Lancers cut the Radar's lead to 2-1 before the first period ended at 9:36 when Evan Ducharme deflected a short past Clin- ton goalie Marc Nother. Lucknow scored the only goal of the second period when Duchane's second marker of the game tied the score at 2-2 at the 11:10 mark. In the third period, Luke Vick's goal at 8:31 while on the power play gave the Radar's a short lived 3-2 lead. As Ryan Murphy and Tyler Doig moved the puck around inside the Lancer's blue line, Luke Vick snuck in behind the Lancer's Joey's Corner Joe Livermore defense to deflect the puck past the Lancer's goalie who played an outstanding game, stopping 60 Radar shorts directed at him. Just under two minutes later, Lancer's forward Jamie Miller tied the game at 3-3 at 10:02 while Clin- ton was playing short- handed. The game ended tied after three periods and it remained the same score after a five-minute over- time period. Then came the shootout where all three Radars players were stopped by the Lancer goalie. Lancer's Tanner Simpson won the contest by beating Nother with the only goal in the shootout. Territorially, the Radars outplayed the Lancers as they outshot the host team 60 to 22, but the Lancer's goalie as the main reason the Radars went down in defeat. As for penalties, the Radars were whistled for only four minutes while the Lancers had six minutes in penalties. The Radar's next game is in Tillsonburg on Saturday, October 29 at 7:30.
