Non -profits of Central Huron: Habitat For Humanity
This column features a different
non-profit in Central Huron
each week. This week's non-
profit is Habitat for Humanity
Jefferson House
Special to the News Record
Habitat For Humanity
(H.F.H.) Huron County is
improving the lifestyles of
many local, low-income
earning families.
In basic terms, H.F.H.
Huron County constructs
safe and affordable homes
for people and families
that live in unsafe homes
or cannot afford the home
they live in. Along with
creating homes, they also
educate the homeowners
ahead of time on how to
maintain a home and on
basic necessities such as
taxes.
The Huron County branch
of the organization began in
Hensall in 2004 by a group
that wanted to make a
change in their community.
With Reverend Robert Dark
as the catalyst, the group of
twenty contacted the Habitat
For Humanity and were
given the rights to use the
company's name. However,
they are a separate affiliation
of Habitat For Humanity
Canada.
Families that receive
homes are required to
have a steady income over
monthly periods. The
family also helps in the
construction of their own
home, which H.F.H Huron
County calls "sweat
equity." This accounts for
roughly 500 hours of vol-
unteer work.
Since the group started
in Huron County, their
track record has been to
build one home each year.
In a recent press release,
construction for a new
home in Central Huron
was mentioned for this
upcoming fall. The con-
struction can take any-
where from 3 months to 9
months, depending on
volunteers and staff. By
July 13 2017, there will be
a "Key Ceremony, which
is the handing of keys to
the new owners of the
building.
The average amount of
fundraising each year is
anywhere from $10,000 to
$150,000 which goes
towards the building of
homes in the Huron County
area. The two Restore
Stores are the main sources
of fundraising. Also, every
May, the Beef On A Bun
fundraiser occurs in order
to earn even more
donations.
All of the funds raised
from the restore stores and
events go toward the
administration costs as
well as the costs for quali-
fied supervisors to monitor
volunteers. The main work
force that helps with con-
struction is volunteers over
the age of 18 from the sur-
rounding communities
near the work site.
Many donations are
given to help, including
items to build like planks
of wood, cement and mor-
tar mix, cables and wires,
and many more
essentials.
If looking to donate, the
Restore Store in Goderich is
open 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
from Mondays to Fridays,
and 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. on
Saturdays.
