Clinton Legion poppy fundraiser takes on new look

This fall, the Legion will be trying a
new method on an old fundraiser.
For years, the Legion has gone
door to door every fall asking for
donations in exchange for a poppy.
This event is extremely important
to the Legion because it is their pri-
mary fundraiser of the year.
With the amount of volunteers
they've had in past years, they have
only been able to knock on the
doors of houses and businesses
located in town in Clinton which
comes to around 1500.
However from now on, they
won't be knocking on doors.
Instead, they will be sending out
envelopes to every home in their
Legion's area of reach for a total of
around 4000 homes.
In the envelope, there will be a
poppy, pre -paid return envelope
and donation form. Tax receipts
will be provided for donations over

a certain amount.
"We're moving into the 21st cen-
tury," joked Doug Stewart, the Clin-
ton Legion's Public Relations
Officer.
There are many benefits to doing
the fundraiser this way.
One obvious benefit is they will
reach more people.
Another huge benefit is they will
be able to reach the surrounding
area, not just Clinton.
"A lot of people in Bayfield are
not aware that this is their Legion,"
said Stewart. "People from the sur-
rounding area are more than wel-
come to come in; they are part of
the community of this Legion:'
Besides Bayfield, Clinton's
Legion's radius also includes the

surrounding towns or Vanastra,
Brucefield, Varna and half way to
Goderich. Houses in these places
will receive the option to donate to
the poppy fundraiser for the first
time as they have never been
reached before.
Stewart is also hoping that reach-
ing out to these places might spark
the interest of people in those
towns to join the Clinton institu-
tion when they are aware that is
their Legion.
Another reason for this change is
it is increasingly difficult for the
Legion to get volunteers as their
membership numbers wane and
many of the members they do have
are becoming more elderly.
"As our numbers dwindle, it
makes it harder and harder to fun-
draise. Yet at the same time, with-
out fundraising, we can't survive."
Both the Goderich and Kincar-
dine legions saw increases in dona-
tions for their poppy campaigns
when they switched from door-to-
door to mailing, so the Clinton
Legion is optimistic about the
change.
Envelopes will be sent out on
October 27, and people can send
their return envelopes back any
time.
Like in past years, there will still
be some boxes with poppies at
local businesses. Poppies will also
be available for purchase at the
branch itself.
