Londesborough News
Brenda Radford
Special to the News Record
It continues to surprise me
when someone comes along
with a comment about one of
my recent columns. In this
most recent case, a member of
our highway crew offered some
help about my items regarding
the Londesborough bridge.
In a previous column, I
stated that the current bridge at
the southern edge of Londes-
borough over the South Mait-
land River was built in the 40s.
The province decided early
in the 1930's to extend Highway
4 north of Clinton to Flesherton.
The current bridge was
erected in 1933 as a result of
the highway extension. Seems
it is an extremely rare example
of a rural open spandril con-
crete arch bridge in Ontario. It
was those arches that were
showing their age. This infor-
mation can be found by goog-
ling "History of Ontario's
Highways':
Incidentally, current work
on the bridge must be wrap-
ping up for the driving lane
has been switched and the
larger pieces of machinery
have been moved away.
Knox United Church in
Auburn held their anniversary
service on Sunday, October 16.
Rev Paul Ross of Exeter was the
moming's guest minister.
On Sunday, October
23, Londesborough United
will hold their anniversary
service. Trish MacGregor of
the Brucefield area, a
Licensed Lay Worship
Leader, will conduct that ser-
vice. "Kindred Spirit'; a harp
quartet - Cathy Smith, Beth
McKenzie, Thyra Knudson
and Marjorie Duizer - will
offer special music during the
service. A time of fellowship
and refreshments will follow
the service.
Rev. Fletcher is hoping to
return to Londesborough's
pulpit on October 30.

SENSE OF AIRY ELEGANCE
This compact two-bedroom home,
designed for a lot that slopes to the
back, includes an unfinished basement
in its plans, ideal as a mortgage -helper
or in-law suite.
The covered entry leads into a foyer with
a 15 -foot ceiling, lit by a narrow window
in the gable above. Directly ahead is the
great room, where the 11 - foot ceiling
lends a sense of airy elegance. Large
windows look out to a covered deck
and the back garden beyond. The gas
fireplace is flanked by built-in shelving.
Adjacent, and open to the great room, is
the dining area, with nine -foot ceilings
and windows on two sides, allowing for
plenty for natural light.
The kitchen is separated from the dining
area and great room by a work island
and eating bar. A spacious pantry is
tucked in at one end of the efficient
L-shaped counter configuration, which
will save steps for the cook.
The laundry room includes a coat closet
and enjoys access to the double garage,
which features a doorway to the side
garden.
The master suite, overlooking the
back of the home, is reached through
an archway from the great room. A
display case provides an ideal spot for
showing off collectibles. The extra -large
en -suite includes an oval tub set at an
angle to save space, and the toilet is
enclosed. Double basins and a shower
stall complete the lay -out. A roomy
walk-in closet is accessible through the
en -suite.
The second bedroom, located at the
front of the home, is adjacent to a three-
piece bathroom.
