Flyers' heart in the right place despite consecutive losses
Richard Madge
Operating a junior hockey
team is not an easy task. The
success of the team depends
on a lot of things, such as
money (lots of it), the quality
of the surrounding minor
hockey systems, fan support
and a lot of volunteers.
The Goderich Orr Insur-
ance Flyers of the Provincial
Junior Hockey League, the lat-
est version of junior hockey in
the town, are a strongly com-
munity -minded organization.
The people behind it work
hard to give local and area
young men a chance to
belong to a team playing a
game important to Canadi-
ans. The team is like a family.
Close, often life-long, ties are
formed. The management

cares about the players and
the players care about the
team. The values the players
acquire from the experience
can be life -influencing.
Here's an example. October
is Breast Cancer Awareness
Month and the Flyers were
one of the first area teams to
become part of the recogni-
tion of this. The players are
sporting pink skate laces. The
young men involved know
there is more to life than win-
ning hockey games. If you are
a Goderich Flyer, that is prob-
ably a good thing because the
franchise doesn't have a his-
tory of winning much, but it is
a well-run organization with
the right objectives behind it.
It's important to remem-
ber that when you read that
the team lost two more
games last weekend. The
players know winning is
important. Games are
played to determine a win-
ner, but the players also
know competing and giving
their all is even more impor-
tant. So, yes, the Flyers lost,
9-2, to Walkerton Last Friday,
Oct. 7, in Walkerton, and 5-3
to the Kincardine Bulldogs
Saturday, Oct. 8, at the MRC,
but they will be back playing
in Hanover this Friday, and
here Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
versus the Wingham Iron -
men doing their best to get
better.
The Flyers found them-
selves short-staffed in Walk-
erton. Due to Thanksgiving
commitments, school com-
mencement, farming and a
suspension, the Flyers were
only able to ice eight for-
wards and five defencemen.
Head coach David Errington
employed a 1-2-2 trap in the
first period which limited the
high -flying Hawks to a 1-1
tie, but the Flyers wore down

in the second. Down 3-1
with two minutes left in the
period, they gave up a cou-
ple of late goals and trailed
5-1 after two periods. The
Hawks went on to outscore
the Flyers 4-1 in the third to
win 9-2. Jordan Caskenette
and Josh Urbshott had two
goals each for Walkerton,
while Spencer Elder, Connor
Patton, Chris VonDenBau-
man, Reid Simmons and
Graydon McArthur each
scored once.
Noah Kuno and Jack Fran-
cis were the Flyer marks-
men. Francis, Logan Kelling-
ton, Mitch Newson and
Trent Buchanan had assists.
Saturday, the Bulldogs
scored two first -period
unanswered goals, but from
there on the Flyers matched
their scoring, with each team
getting one goal in the sec-
ond period and two in the
third. The score was tied 3-3
with 10 minutes left in the
game
Flyers assistant coach Doug
Cruickshank gave credit to his
team for their three -period
effort and felt that several
players on the still -shortened
Flyers' bench battled excep-
tionally hard to keep the team
in the game.
"The hard work will eventu-
ally pay off for us," said
Cruickshank.
Robert White led the Bull-
dogs with two goals. Will Rick
erby, Mike Osadca and
Keegan Angel had singles.
For the Flyers, Jack Francis,
Riley Connors and Ryan Stulp
scored, with assists going to
Mitch Newson, Wyatt Carey,
Tyler Stacey and Stulp.
The loss for the Flyers was
their eighth of the season to go
along with one win and a tie in
10 games.
