Stray cats an issue in Bayfield Justine Alkema Clinton News Record Since spring, stray cats in Bayfield has become an increasingly problem- atic issue. Mayor Hessel said it's extremely difficult to estimate how many cats there are, but if he had to guess, he would say upwards of 100. It's mostly localized to one area, too, which is around Howard, Jane and Del- evan Street. "We've never had this type of issue in the past," said Hessel. "If it was a couple of cats, it wouldn't be a big issue. It's a small issue that's grown." The problem likely started with one cat that may not have been looked after, and it bred with another cat, likely a house cat. It may have then produced a litter and escalated from there. One big factor that exacerbates the problem is people feeding the cats, which the municipality is strongly encouraging residents to avoid doing, unless they want to keep the cat. Mayor Hessel said it isn't that they aren't cat or pet friendly, but there are several issues that come up with stray cats. First, people have complained of the cats leaving feces in their yards and sand boxes. Also, people may not like cats or may be allergic to cats and not want them on their property. It is also unsafe for the cats themselves to be untaken care of, especially with winter coming. The health unit, bylaw enforcement and animal control officer have all been involved to help control the problem. People are encouraged to contact the SPCA if they know of a stray cat that needs a home. r xy. rri-urea HYDRANT / BLOW -OFF FLUSHING NOTICE Hydrant and Blow -off flushing will take place through the Day in: ➢ SEAFORTH & EGMONDVILLE & BRUCEFIELD during the weeks of October 24th, 31st and November 7th, 2016. ➢ VANASTRA during the week of November 14th, 2016 The water is safe, however you may notice cloudy or coloured water.
