at int'I mine rescue competition
The Goderich Mine Res-
cue Team earned gold and
silver medals at the 10th
International Mines Rescue
Competition, hosted by
Workplace Safety North and
Ontario Mine Rescue in Sud-
bury Aug. 19 to 26.
The Compass Minerals
team competed against 26
teams representing 13
nations in mining emer-
gency response simulations
including an underground
scenario, firefighting, first
aid, high -angle rope rescue
as well as theoretical and
practical knowledge testing.
The Goderich team earned
gold in written theory and
silver in underground
rescue.
"Our rescue team has
made us very proud," said
Gerry Rogers, vice president
of operations at Goderich
Mine. "The gold and silver
awards are world's best and

The Nataraj Youth Cultural
Organization celebrated
Mahatma Gandhi's birthday
and international non-vio-
lence day on October 2, 2016
at the Huron County
Museum.
Every year, NYCO has
been bringing different com-
munities together for the
cause of non-violence and
peace and hosts events in
different regions of Ontario.
The Huron County
Museum was beautifully
decorated with symbols
associated with Ghandi's
life such as the Charka (Spin-
ning Wheel).
This event was attended
by many guests and speak-
ers. The program started
with the president and
founder of NYCO, Chintan
Bhaysar, who welcomed all
the esteemed guests and
explained the importance of
this day.
It was then followed by a
speech by the Mayor of
Goderich, Mr. Kevin Morri-
son. The other speakers
included a representative
from MPP Lisa Thomson's
office, Dr. Gezahgn Wordofa
from the Multicultural Asso-
ciation Perth Huron and Mr.
Kaushik P. Patel of Clinton.
While celebrating the event,
a short film was also
screened on life of Mahatma
Gandhi.
They received a message
from the Consulate General
of India, Mr. Dinesh Bhatiya,
and MPP Dr. Raymond Cho.
The program ended with a
delicious lunch, prepared
and served by the volunteers
of NYCO and Mrs. Smita K.
Patel.
Thank you to NYCO Vol-
unteers Mr. N. V. Sond-
arva, Mr.Praful Bhaysar,
Mr.Ketan Gandhi, Mr. Avi-
yesh Solanki and Mrs. Alka
Pandya for making this event
a success.

The competition allows
mines to evaluate and com-
pare the effectiveness and
quality of their mine rescue
training programs. Teams
participate in the spirit of
competition and collabora-
tion to understand how other
teams work, while testing
their own mine rescue skills.
