The `Malta' today
CONTINUED FROM > PAGE 7
The 'Malta's crew stayed at the
Commercial Hotel (Little Inn) for a
few days before making their way
home. Captain Buckley explained
that a navigational error was respon-
sible for the loss of his ship but as
local historian Lucy Diehl wrote in
'The Clinton News -Record,' many
heads were 'wagged in doubt.' For
an experienced sailor like Captain
Buckley, who knew the lakes so well,
such a fundamental navigational
error was hard to fathom.

You may experience discoloured water coming from your tap. If this happens, we suggest you try the
following:
• Remove the tap aerators off your taps and flush the cold water house lines until it runs clear.
• Flush out your hot water tanks. This is to remove the accumulated iron that precipitates out in the
tank; this iron may also decrease the efficiency of your water tank.
You may experience lower than normal pressure as a result of the flushing activities. We apologize for
any inconvenience this may cause. OCWA will continue to work on the flushing programs to ensure
consumer satisfaction.

Captain Buckley was not the first
lake skipper to attempt a fraudulent
insurance claim but, as Buckley's
own son was aboard, it stretches
credulity to imagine him risking his
son's life by deliberately scuttling
his vessel on an unknown shore.
Superstitious seamen believe
every ship has a will of her
own. The Malta stubbornly refused
to be budged from her spot.
In December 1882, Goderich
merchant C. C. Lee purchased the
wreck for $500. Whatever attempt,
if any, Lee made to move the Malta
is unknown, but she remained
wedged in the rocks for decades
becoming a part of village life.
Harry Baker in 'My Memoirs'
remembers that the Malta's oak tim-
bers and furnishings were salvaged
by locals. Her cutlery and plate ware
appeared in local homes. Her pine
spars were made into fishing boxes.
Her Masts were milled into roofing
shingles for fishermen's cabins. The
Malta's cabin was removed to shore
and used as a bathing house change
room for swimmer. Even her hull
served as a break wall against which
prevented erosion of the cliff.
The steps to the beach at the end
of Delevan Street were called the
'Malta steps' by locals. As late as
World War II, Diehl writes that
some suggested that her iron
spikes could be salvaged for the
war effort. Indeed, the Malta
became a useful Bayfield citizen.
Even after she was dislodged in
1952 from the lake floor, the Malta
was reluctant to leave Bayfield as
her hulk washed up on the
beach. She broke in half and
slipped back into the lake the fol-
lowing year. In 1974, Wes and
Mike Gozzard found her rudder
still wedged between the two rocks
that she grounded upon 92 years
before. It was recovered and
embedded in cement for posterity.
As late as 2011, the Malta's skeletal
remains are still visible in aphoto
taken by Karen Laithcockin Dave Gil-
lians in 'For the Love of Bayfield: St
Andrew must have favoured Bayfield's
Celtic fishermen, and the schooner
Malta because she bequeathed to the
village a storied legacy that remains
today.
