The tournament was held Aug. 1-8. This year's team was com- prised of players from Califor- nia, Missouri, Illinois, Colo- rado, Minnesota, Ohio and Ontario. With only 13 players, two ofwhomwere goalies, the short bench had to work extremely hard. After defeat- ing Pro Hockey, Sweden and Czech Republic, the West Coast Selects faced Finland in the semi-finals, whom they beat to meet their rivals in the finals -- the undefeated East Coast Selects. However, Kerr and The West Coast Selects dominated and won gold 3-0. As a result of a hockey try- out in Detroit, Michigan, USA, almost two years ago, Kerr was chosen to participate on the elite female North Ameri- can hockey team. Non -profits of Central Huron: Clinton Public Hospital Foundation Justine Alkema Clinton News Record This column features a different non-profit operat- ing in Central Huron each week. This week's non-profit is the Clinton Public Hospi- tal Foundation. There were fears in the late 1990s that the provin- cial government at that time was going to obscure the reserve funds raised and held by local hospital boards. As a result of this fear, many hospitals developed a foundation to keep their funds an arm's length away so those funds could be protected and then allo- cated back to the hospital. One of the foundations formed was the Clinton Pub- lic Hospital Foundation. "Our mission is fund- raising, absolutely, and being stewards for the investment accounts," said Chair of the Foundation Board Darren Stevenson. Since its 2004-2005 year, the foundation has raised almost 2 million dollars for the cause. "Most of that is used for equipment, some to sup- port major renovations in the hospital, and some to help the HPHA in doctor and nurse recruiting efforts." The foundation hosts some well-known events in the community includ- ing their bi-annual gala, bi-annual day in conjunc- tion with the Clinton Raceway and is a part of CKNX's annual Health Care Heroes Radiothon. The board consists of all volunteers; the only paid staff they have is one part time administrator. The board is a mix of different community members including business own- ers, farmers, professionals and more. Stevenson commented that they depend on their many volunteers and their support from other organ- izations such as the CPH Auxiliary, which hosts their own events, such as the recent penny sale. The also get support from other groups such as the Lions Club, Kinsmen and Kinettes. "We're very appreciative of the support we get from the local residents and business community. Without them, we don't do anything," said Stevenson. "We're very fortunate to have a hospital and have such a caring community to support the hospital we have." Huron -Bruce MP Ben Lobb's bill on lowering taxes for alcohol distilleries defeated A Private Member's bill aimed to lower taxes for Canadian distilleries was shot down in the House of Commons Wednesday, Sept. 21. Created by Huron -Bruce Conservative MP Ben Lobb, Bill C-232 was voted down by Members of Parliament 156-136. "It is disappointing a bill that would have such a positive impact on small and medium spirit pro- ducers in Canada, but also the Canadian agriculture and tourism industry was voted down by the Liberal government," Lobb said in a press released. If enacted, the bill would have reduced the excise tax paid by Canadian distillers from $11.69 per litre of abso- lute ethyl alcohol to $6 per liter for the first 100,000 litres of production and $11 for all alcohol produced above that. The bill was debated for about an hour during Tues- day, where Lobb argued that no matter their political stance, he has received phone calls and emails from distillers coast to coast to show support for Bill C-232. "We've had distilleries say, `if this happens, if this reduc- tion happens we'll hire 30 people.' I had another dis- tiller say, `if you do this it will reduce my excise tax by $50,000; we'll be able to hire another person.' So this is what we're talking about. A chance to reduce taxes in a certain sector that's actually going to create economic activity by purchasing plant and equipment material and also hire more materials."
