Clinton Minor Baseball to improve softball diamond
Justine Alkema
Clinton News Record
Clinton Minor Baseball is
keeping up with the increas-
ing registration numbers for
minor ball in different ways,
the newest way being redo-
ing their softball diamond.
The organization recently
added new lights to the
baseball diamond by the
racetrack. Now, they will be
focusing on the softball
diamond beside that.
Some improvements they
will be making will include
improving the light level,
moving the fences further
back, and improving the
surface of the playing field
by removing the stone dust
and replacing it with sports
clay.
These improvements will
create more uses out of the
diamond. Right now, it is
only useable for slow pitch.
However with these
improvements, they will be
able to play up to Peeweee
level baseball on the
diamond.
At this point, they are
unsure of the exact cost of
the improvements, but
Facilities Manager Steve
Campbell estimates it may
be around $40,000.
"We have numerous fund-
raising efforts through the
baseball association and
donations throughout the
year [to fund the upgrades],"
said Campbell.
The plan is to do as much
as possible this fall so it will
be ready by next baseball
season.
"In perfect world, if can
move the screens to move
the fences and get ground-
work done, lights could be
done next spring."

Over 200 attend "If You Grew up in Clinton" Facebook group reunion
Doug Peterson
Special to the News Record
What if you threw a
party and nobody came?
That was never a ques-
tion asked by the hosts
(Pat Taylor, Paul Anstett,
and me) of the first ever
"If You Grew up in Clinton
Facebook Reunion" On
October 1. There was no
doubt that this would be a
successful event; it was
just a matter of how
successful.
The Facebook group
started with a conversa-
tion a couple of years ago
and then the magic hap-
pened. At present, it has
over 2,100 members. It's
managed by the entire
group, and there are folks
online daily to manage
and add people to the
group.
The goal is to ultimately
make "virtual Clinton" the
same size as "real Clinton"
by tapping into people
who grew up in our lovely
town.
Despite all the advan-
tages of conversing online,
there was a desire to see as
many people face to face as
possible. That happened on
Saturday, October 1 at the
Fish and Game Club. There
was no formal agenda and
that's a good thing. It
allowed for people to min-
gle and make connections
to people they hadn't seen
for years. There were well
over 200 in attendance with
some travelling a great dis-
tance to attend.
The early birds were
there at the stroke of 2 and
many stayed until kicked
out! Some never wanted
the event to end.
The only formal part of
the event was the taking of
"decade" school pictures of
those who attended Central
Huron or Clinton Collegiate
through the years. These
photos are now online and
viewable in the group.
Donations to cover the
expenses were accepted at
the door. The leftover
amount ($600) will be
donated to the local food
bank.
The Facebook group is a
very active place for mem-
ory discussions and hon-
ouring the things that made
Clinton the great place that
it is; Sherlock Manning, the
Train Station, Anstett Jew-
elers, Bartliff's Bakery, and
so much more. To these
discussions, there is now a
nice collection of pictures
and discussions of this
event.
The Clinton News -
Record and the Goderich
Signal -Star contributed
photos from their archives
to add to the memories.
The Facebook group is
still open and a vibrant
entity. If you're a Facebook
user, just ask to be added
and one of the group will be
happy to do it.
