A group of grades 7 and 8 students are
setting the example for younger students at
Clinton Public School by organizing their
bullying awareness and prevention week
last week from November 21-25.
Bullying awareness and prevention week
is Canada wide and takes place every third
week each November; it was started in 2003
by Canadian educator Bill Belsey.
Public elementary schools in Ontario are
required to have a safe schools team con-
sisting of students, parents, teachers and
staff members to plan initiatives and raise
awareness regarding bullying in their
respective schools.
On Friday, November 25, the students at
C.P.S. wore pink and had a very special
assembly organized by the safe schools
team.
"What we're really trying to do is honour
student voice," said C.P.S. Principal Marie
McDade. "So we have a team of students
planning the week."
The group of students organizing the
assembly, all who volunteered for the posi-
tion, were hard at work beforehand getting
things ready. They filmed two videos for the
event - one of a news cast giving facts about
bullying and one of a story of a girl who is
bullied to the point that she doesn't want to
come to school until a peer stands up for
her.
The group also did announcements all
week, made posters and read books to
younger classes about bullying.
The committee all agreed that it was very
important for their school to have a "safe
schools team': They said bullying happens
everywhere in all schools - on the play-
ground, in the classroom, after school and
more.
This is the first year they have had a safe
schools team at C.P.S., and the team agreed
that their work would continue after the
assembly; perhaps this will mean continue-
ing to organize events or just by taking
active steps against bullying in their own
classrooms and beyond.
