Third structure fire in Blyth this month Justine Alkema Clinton News Record The Fire Department of North Huron was at their third structure fire of the month on the morning of Wednesday, November 23. The depart- ment had fought blazes earlier in November at a barn fire and a trailer fire; this time, it was at a house in town, just off the main street on King Street. The house was unoccupied at the time and no one was injured. The cause of the fire was electrical, and though damages are estimated at $75,000, the house could have been much worse if it weren't for the quick action of a neighbour. A neighbour in a home right next door (the houses are very close proximity to each other,) was alerted at 7 a.m. by the sound of a smoke alarm coming from inside the adjacent house; they called 911 and the FDNH was quickly on scene with firefighters from Blyth and Wingham. They fought the fire until 9:30 a.m. "FDNH crews were able to extinguish this fire quickly, but the fire was in the attic space, so there was signifi- cant water and smoke dam- age throughout the entire home," said Deputy Chief Matt Townsend. One of the neighbouring homes also wound up in a lot smoke, but sustained no lasting damage. The fire serves as a reminder for residents to be on guard for the sound of alarms. "If you hear an alarm, check it out; never assume it's a false alarm," advised Fire Preven- tion Officer James Marshall. NWMO open house CONTINUED FROM > PAGE 2 The borehole is about 5-6 inches in diameter and will go about a kilometre into the ground. There also must be a pre- ferred location for them to dig the borehole; if there isn't, Wil- son said they will continue to work with the public until appropriate. All nine municipalities that are still being considered for the facil- ity are also in the preliminary assessment stage of the process. "There's nothing imminent," said Wilson. All of these things are part of what will be discussed at the upcoming open house on November 30. Residents are also welcome to visit the Leam More Centre any other time of the week; their hours are Mon- day - Wednesday from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. There is always some- one there to engage with visi- tors, however the open house day will feature a geology spe- cialist to tallc about more spe- cific issues. The process the NWMO is taking is very, very slow. These are baby steps for a project that is far down the road. However due to the magnitude of the project, they believe that the pace, determined by the com- munity, and approach they are taking is crucial to the success of the nationally important project. Since the inception of nuclear power in Canada in the 1960's, Canada has produced 2.6 million used nuclear bun- dles; this is enough to fit into seven hockey rinks of radioac- tive waste. The waste has already been created - now the question is where to put it.
