The best known and most fre-
quently performed choral work of
western music is Handel's "Mes-
siah': Itis also the best known work
of the Baroque music period.
George Frideric Handel com-
posed this massive oratorio in just
24 days between August 22 and
September 14 in 1741. Itis a com-
mentary on Christ's, the Messiah's,
nativity, passion, resurrection and
ascension and is based on texts
from The King James Bible.
It was fust performed in Dublin,
Ireland in 1742 and one year
later was presented in the Covent
Garden Theatre in London, Eng-
land. Handel admittedlyfine-tuned
his work for the next 12 years.
The Messiah has been per-
formed by choirs around the world.
Singers find the work challenging
but thrilling to present. The most
familiar chorus of the Messiah is the
"Hallelujah" chorus which con-
cludes part two of three of the work,
God's Ultimate Glory.
The belief is that King George II
was present at the London concert
and, to show his appreciation, he
stood up. This obliged the rest of the

vice Fund.

Community United Church ladies
will be hosting a Yuletide Bazaar
and tea from 1:30 - 3:30 p.m.
There will be lots of baking, a ven-
dors market featuring local ven-
dors, white elephant table and tea
room. Everyone Welcome!
Huron Centennial School will
be celebrating their 50th Anniver-
sary next September. Please con-
tact the school if you are able to
help plan for this event.
The Varna Community were
saddened to hear of the sudden
passing of Marion Coleman Sym-
pathy goes out to her close family
and friends. She will be greatly
missed by many!
audience to stand as well. Hence
the custom to stand for this chorus
was born. [This is a long piece of
work and perhaps he needed to
stretch his legs!]
The Blyth Festival Singers have
performed parts of the Messiah
during their years of concerts, but
this year have beenworkingto pre-
sent the whole oratorio. They will be
singing with the Stratford Concert
Choir for a concert in Stratford and
then in Goderich with Ian Sadler on
the organ for both.
